The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe...

Heres hoping they are doing for this classic what was recently done with Lord of the Rings. This first preview kinda makes it seem that way. Although I AM worried about it due to it being Disney. But with Eisner gone, I'll definatly be giving it a go. :D

Disney's been sinking a ton of cash into this one, actually, banking on it to be Disney's return vehicle to the halcyon days of Little Mermaid. Whether that's good or bad remains to be seen, but on paper, it sure looks great. Of course, it's Disney, and most of what they touch turns to tripe, but there's hope. Plus, James McAvoy (and the IMDB page used to list Brian Cox as the voice of Aslan, though both Cox and Aslan are now conspicuously absent).

What I've seen (ie the trailer) certainly looks impressive, and they do have NZ's landscape to play with (not to mention Weta). The director is one of the co-directors of Shrek (and a NZer, too!), so there's lots of potential there. It all depends on how hands-off Disney is being. If they're getting too involved it'll likely come out crap.

like I said, I'm curious now that Eisner is gone. He was definatly trying to kill Disney...

Hm. Well, just watched the trailer after letting it download all night. It was... uneven. The acting and especially delivery in the first half of the trailer seemed very clumsy. Maybe the directing isn't bad in the final film, but at least in the trailer, it doesn't hold up well. (On the other hand, the opening lines of the trailer are hacked together from clearly much larger dialogue, so who knows.)

Visually, the film's incredible, though the color palette's a bit over the top. LotR had a much more subdued, realistic color palette; still, again, hard to tell how it'll work in the final cut, but here, at least, it was a little unpleasant.

Special effects also look a bit cartoony— in fact, a bit too much like the Warg fight crossed with Shrek, which I don't like. Definitely a step back from Gollum. Then again, they've got Weta and half a year before release, so maybe it's unfinished. Also, I hope that flash on entering the wardrobe was trailer-only post production.

And despite all that (and despite it being a reasonably lame trailer altogether), the score's pretty awesome and the whole thing still looks pretty cool.

I've always said you can judge a movie on by it's score, and this score ROCKS. I want the soundtrack already. :)

That's a Disney thing, I think. They always have bright, usually over-bright, palettes in their movies.

Again, Disney movie. It's not meant to be hard-core adults only fantasy.

That may be (and probably is) Disney influence, but it's worth pointing out that LotR wasn't really done as "hardcore adults only fantasy" either. And, hell, I guess it's only fair to point out that the Narnia books were always intended as kids' stuff anyway, but I would still have preferred a more mature take. I'm still really curious about what's going to happen with the Dark Materials trilogy, though. In a sense, they're sort of the antithesis of everything Narnia.

Did any one ever read C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy , the first book was called Out of the Silent Planet, the second Perelandra and third, That Hideous Strength. If your a fan of Narnia, they are worth a look, though they are more "scifi" and less "fantasy" than Narnia.
