Ohh yup, that sounds like a scam. At least this time the person was smart enough not to bring up the "I have a money order for 23,000 that needs to be cashed, do that for me and keep a certain amount for yourself...". They'd likely do that after the sale, once they figure they had you. Watch your bids closely, and if that person bids, report them to ebay.

If the guy is using a postal money order, it's probably not a scam.

Check his feedback. If he has plenty of positive feedback, it's probably legit.

Do they have postal money orders in Scotland?

It's up to you if you want to do it; if you really don't want to ship to another country, then tell the guy 'no' and let the auction play itself out.

It's nothing like that. For one thing, the guy has to pay first, and using a postal money order, not a personal check.

i decided to give this one a miss. id rather miss it and not sell it, than get it scammed off me

When in doubt just let it pass. Someone else will come along and buy it. It sounds suspiciously like another spin on the nigerian scams. He just seems to be very careful not to let it look like so right away. I'd beware when he says "or better let me make you my offer". Seems like he's going to bring up the I'll send you the 10,000 dollar cashiers check (or whatever huge amount) and you keep an extra $1000 plus the cost of the camera and send me the rest back. Then you get the cashiers check from the bank of Hewlett Packard, you deposit it, send him the rest back and when its detected as a fake the next day by the bank you have a $10,000 withdrawl from your account on its way to some scammer.

    exactly...

Never EVER trust an ebayer that has less than 10 hell maybe even 50. Always check how long they've been on & what they have sold/bought some people have fake feedback...example 2 cent chewing gum or the same item repeatively from the same user.

I have been hit by a few scams that I have avoided. They will sometimes say ok you want such & such heres the invoice the guy didnt pay but its outside ebay...SCAM. Another is one guy will send you a second chance offer & its not even the same user...Then they close their account when you figure it out. Be damn careful I nearly lost a grand.

Except that i just saw a big poster up at my bank, about a current scam involving nigeria and postal money orders. the orders they send, while they look 100% real, are not, they count on a bank teller not noticing when you cash it, and by the time its found out, they have their item/money.

And the thing is Money Orders are considered a good method in lieu of a credit card if you don't have one becuase unlike checks, money orders are protected by federal mail fraud laws.

    Damn scammers...
  • Let me see... *Checks list*

    1: It's a "present".
2: The buyer lives in Africa.
3: He wants to pay by Postal Money Order.

    Yep, odds-on it's a scam, alright.

lol, just looked at his feedback status:

been a member for less than a month
    registered in singapore
and has a feedback rating of 0

    i dont think so!

Id take it a step further submit the email to EBAY and report him before somebody does get scammed.
  • Agreed, it's best to nip these people in the proverbial bud.

done. a little too suspicious IMO
  • When considering the feedback of another trader... one should remember that *some* ways exist for falsifying positive feedback.

If multiple people interested in fraud register their accounts... and then perform meaningless transactions between each other... they *may* succeed in creating positive feedback.

In studying a person's feedback, one should give positive comments relevance only if:

    1) They used a third-party-verified means of payment
    2) They are too diverse to falsify

The best currently-known means of blocking the generation of reputation via shilling... is a "web of trust" calculation to verify if the considered party has engaged in meaningful and honest transactions with an already sufficiently trusted party.
  • I personally never buy high-value items on eBay, and definately not if they're popular electrical goods. It always seems that it's these fraudsters always go for.

I once bought a high dollar item on EBay, before the scamming started getting bad...

A guy out of Texas sold a DPS PVR system to me for around $1400 (back when I used to have money). He took a chance on me because it was only the 3rd item I had bought on EBay at the time...

I'm glad he did, since I still have and use that system. :)

    Was a great purchase!
  • Well as long as it turned out OK for you, Jack. :)

Thing is, eBay seems to have become a haven for scammers, and I really don't want to take the chance. (In addition, I like the security of a warranty/guarentee on electronic goods which a lot of eBay sellers can't give you.)
