aww.. hell.. winxp wont let me delete unexisting file

Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Sope.. I figure there's some peeps here that i can beg for information for how to remove a certain file from my desktop. Basically, i was downloading an update for Knights of the Old Republic from Pelit.fi then my connection was cut off and pc had a bit of a nervous breakdown.. Now, there's a file of 0 bytes on my desktop that doesnt allow itself to be deleted, because it is in "use".

Ah, beg thee kind massah.. Be kind for an old hermit.

The file is probably in use by some other software, usually I get around this problem by closing the software that might be using the file or then if I don't know what software is using it I restart the computter.

Familiar problem. Boot the computer to console mode, and delete it manually. Old DOS -flashbacks included. ;) Works at least in Win 2000 SP4 when all else fails... :p

No software running, and rebooting does not help. :)

Was the button to boot the thing to console F8? Havent done in ages, and on xp that doesnt work atleast..

And no option for it from shutdown menu.. well, i'll try to oogle it. :)

Yup. Should be F8, but that doesnt work. :/

On a lighter note, it takes this much time to reboot my pc (- 40 secs)

Try using the recovery console to delete it. You need your WinXP CD. Boot from it and select the recovery console when asked. Then go to where the file is in the command prompt and delete it there. If it's on your desktop, you'll find it in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop (assuming your C drive is where the docs&settings folder is).

It's never that easy.. SO... Just booting from cd ain't enough right?

I mean, let's say i put it to boot from cd, then i get the blue screen and it starts loading everything from cd. I waited for it to load a few mins and got tired. No faster way?

Or some way to find out what "program" is using it? or is any?

I have had problems like that. In Safe Mode you can delete anything off the desktop.

    Well. I'm a winxp noob.

And things like computers just love to piss me off with something that isn't supposed to be able to happen.

IT's like I'm a magnet for ... well.. bad things.

Well, one thing that's sure-fire is to download the EBCD Pro -image from the 'net, burn the image as a CD, boot from it and use some shell explorer to destroy the bugger. No way in hell that one would leave it be, methinks.

    Could still be wrong, though.

When the BIOS finished POSTing, hold down the [Shift] key. You have to hit it before the first "Starting Windows XP" screen. That wuill get you into safe mode.

You have to wait for it to load all that stuff off the CD before you can select the recovery console, Refa.
  • By all means, pressing F8 at the right time *should* interrupt the boot process -- permitting you to choose console, and likewise choose Safe Mode.

If not... using the CD seems the way to go.

I just hope it wasn't a bad idea to name my pc S.H.O.D.A.N...

    This is standard stupid windows.

You can always boot off a linux CD, mount the NTFS file system, and delete it that way :D

I never forget what mounts... NEVER FORGET WHO MOUNTS!!!!!

No, you can't. Linux NTFS support still only allows writing if you don't change the file size.

One more reason why my boot drive is still Fat32.

(when it shows that table with all kinds of devices)

Or you can get boot menu visible from Control Panel > System > Advanced settings or what's it is in English, but its next tab from tab with device manager. (which doesn't tell truth about devices/their drivers like do they really work... soundcard OK but Winamp disagreed because it couldn't find it)

Now it should show basic menu when booting... and there should read some additional instructions on lower side of screen.

But changing directory to profile's desktop is propably little harder.
