I note a distinct lack of toasted cheese rolls. How did this come about!?!
Don't opt for the Athlon, it may be faster and cheaper but it runs HOT!! And can prove less stable due to compatibility (if there is such a thing) problems, a nasty little thing called the Via core logic chipset on the southbridge! Plus the ever present shadow of the MSCorp and all the fantastically functional and universally compatible (not to mention wonderfully supported) software that they produce.

My friend got an athlon, and I got a Duron, and both works perfectly - No heat problems, exelent performance, and only crashes once a month or something. (and I use my comp a lot)
So dont come here and say it aint good
just forgot to mention that we have the small ones, 0.18 micron tech or what ever its called.

It is interesting that you say that,
because a lot of my trouble is in fact due to gart drivers needing to be updated and a certain creative GForce 2 Pro that seems to disagree with working most of the time. My Athlon Thunderbird is not only slippier than a porn stars nipple (refering to clock speed of course), but is also very reliable.
My system only ever crashes when I play games, but then it always crashes! (Doh!) So I must appologise to all who are offended at my offhand remarks about AMD processors (although they do generate more heat than equivilent Intel chips, not that I'm saying one is better than the other!)
Before anyone else jumps on the band wagon, I am not slater Creative or Nvidia either, just mentioning that I have had problems with mine. The graphics card that is.
Don't you just hate being PC!? Are the Shadows PC? Or the Vorlons even? Do you think that carrion eating species are PC!?
Does anyone out there know anything about GForce cards? Other than mundane tips about avoiding IRQ conflicts and the like I have not found anyone who seems to know much about them, other than they are shit hot! (When they work!)
I have a via north and south motherboard (a microstar), running as I mentioned, a Thunderbird at about 1.2 GHz. My card is a creative GB0010 GF2 Pro/GTS and I have tried both generic (reference) and manufacturers drivers for the card. I have tweaked bios settings and up to date motherboard drivers (as the system is less than 6 mnths old) up to date bios, DX8. Nothing appears to be wrong, but no game will run for more than 15 mins without hanging the system!
F*** it, I'm gonna OD on stimms and JD.
Life was barely worth living without B5 space combat sim, but no games at all?
Oh, and if heat were an issue, why hasn't AMD had to recall any CPU due to heat problems and massive failure rates (See: Pentium III 1.13 gHz)?

YOU'RE ALL WIERDING ME OUT!!!!!!
What are you all talking about?

This all worries the hell out of me becuase, as you know, I'm in the middle of putting a Dabs "wish list" together for a new PC.
I might have to just stump up the extra 2-300 quid for a 1.7 Ghz P4. My computer is also my job, and if there is any chance of it assing up at a critical time - it doesn't bare thinking about...
Still, the Gladiac Geforce 3 is NOT moving of that list
Keep following that rainbow

possibly futile, but very human.
I have to agree with you that the biggest problems with AMD's current chips stems outwards from the Via components. They have so many incompatibilities. Windows XP is supposed to be VERY nice in this respect, with modular processor code to make it run more efficiently and with greater stability, but I do not know until I test it for myself. Right now, I've given up on getting Windows 2000 to run properly on some of the Athlon systems i've worked on. It would just plain not cooperate. Nvidia has had some horrible issues with it, too. I can only hope that via fixes these somehow.
Just FYI, I'm running XP on an Athlon 850 and it runs Sweeet, especially for a Beta. i also ran Xp on my Celery 400, and it ran well on taht, a little slow. but usable.

..And so it Begins
My system is Duron 750 on a Abit KT7A-RAID mainboard with a ASUS GeForceDDR GFX card. No problems.
My friends pc is T-bird 900 on a ASUS A7V (I think) with a Geforce 2 MX card of some sort. As far as I know, no problems:P

Goodie! Perhaps I'll upgrade sometime. 'tis an interesting idea.
I just finished my research and I am going w/ a 1 GHz Athlon Thuderbird 266 FSB w/ the decently reviewed Asus A7A266 DDR motherboard. I did enough review research that I feel confident about it being stable, but just in case I bought an extra case fan to resolve any heat issues Combine that w/ a 128 DDR ram chip and a 32MB Geforce 2 DDR graphics card and I feel confident I will smoke shadows with the best of them in ITF.
