• Wow, that really sounds kind of dumb. It would have been better if you could choose weather or not to be a member of starfleet, or the klingon or romulan fleets etc..

But it just doesn't sound like a great overall game design.

I don't know, it's actually sounding like a decent idea. The problem is, how do you form a crew, and how would the crew function if, say, someone had to not be there due to real-life matters? It could be a really interesting way of linking people together with vastly different skills. Example: I suck at combat, but I am a pretty decent pilot. I can fly and drive extremely well in a variety of games, but I can't fight for the life of me. However, with this, you could (possibly) have a distinct helmsman, gunner, engineering/damage control guy, and so forth. I wouldn't mind also being relegated to engineering on occasion, as long as it were a fair balance of tasks.

Also, I did thoroughly read the article, and I'm counting computer players as not being there at all. I can't even imagine an AI helming a starship effectively.

...and how many interations of the name Enterprise do you think would be spawned for each and every ship..:D

Well, let's see...

Enterprise

I think I've made my point.

I figured that names would be randomly assigned, or that crews would get a choice from a list. I was more worried about the U.S.S. Sofa King Fleet Beeyotch and the Federation Starship Klingon My Balls, though.

Sofa King Fleet Beeyotch? Did you just make that up or that from something? I suddenly got an image of that guy from National Lampoons who had the whole star trek crew in his living room. & He always carried the tricorder & the Uhura doll. :D

ehh it may not have been national lampoons either.cant remember.

i dunno, im almost interested in the concept......tho i said the same thing about SW Galaxies, and look how that turned out:rolleyes:
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
Well, one of the major problems with SW Galaxies is probably SOE...
• WORFWORF The Burninator
Lucasarts are considering shutting down Galaxies and giving it to another company to rebuild.

I am curious to see how this game will turn out. Hopefully they can get around the problem of needing people to be the crew of a ship, imagine:

The Borg are invading, only one ship stands in their way, and their helmsman is asleep.

unless they just get an AI bot to takeover when that happens, sorta like a shift change maybe?

Sounds like a bad Star Trek comedy.

The more I think about this, the better I like it.

It'd finally give me a trek game that would be team friendly.

If it is subscription, though, they've lost my business.

It may be more anvantagious if this wasn't a persistant universe, just people coming together to play a mission (similar to allegiance). A persistant universe would most likly invoke a subscription.
• Continuity would be impossible; the only way this could work would be if players were not assigned to ships, but rather could join the crew of any ship, much as one might join a party in a traditional MMOG.

Ew.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
I know, this game screams of continuity though, but that requires everyone to be commited to the game and we know how much real life can get in the way.
• The concept is staring to wear on me.

I think my initial reaction was due to the fact that it is an MMOG. A genre I have not been fond of. I'm just against paying a monthly fee to play a game I had to shell out US$50 just to get it installed. And the ones I have tried haven't been able to hold my interest for more than a couple of weeks. The only exception being Galaxies, but I got bored of that after a couple of months.

I like a good story, something to drive the game forward. In these online games the only thing driving you forward is reaching your next level. And then once you max out there isn't anything to do but start over again.
• FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
I would agree, it seems that many of these online games just end up being glorified chat rooms, with some weird online politics thrown in for fun.

Hell everyone should just save their money and go back to MUDs...besides its more fun to navigate a game in the following manner:

If you want them to keep the servers running though..
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I'd rather not detail my financial situation, but lets just say that living expenses are far outweighing income and account balances...

Every dollar counts, and I am not willing to pay anything for a subscription to a game service. Hell, I probably wouldn't even buy it until it's been out for a while.

Plus, while game servers do need to be maintained, with the amount of players they'd bring in, they would not need to charge US$12.95 per month to maintain them. Perhaps US$2-5 I could understand and maybe accept, but no more. Especially given how much crap some people put up with because of bugs in the games themselves.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
I know what youre talking about.. But if you want a good mmo, I suspect youd have to pay a monthly fee..
