Nintendo Revolution information revealed
By Tony 'Zing' Tomas
March 11, 2005
After a whole lot of speculation Nintendo finally revealed quite a bit of information about their forthcoming Next-Generation console. Speaking at the Game Developers Conference yesterday, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata outlined the company’s bold vision for the future. Iwata, a veteran video game designer and player himself, made several major announcements during his keynote speech, “The Heart of the Gamer,” including such highlights as (for our comments on what all this means read on to the end):
* Nintendo’s next game console, code-named “Revolution,” is proceeding on schedule and will include both backward compatibility and Wi-Fi features.
* Nintendo soon will offer a free Wi-Fi connection service to Nintendo DS owners.
* Iwata demonstrated several new software titles using the innovative features of the Nintendo DS, including voice recognition, touch-screen control and wireless connectivity.
* Iwata unveiled new images from the highly anticipated Legend of Zelda adventure coming this year for Nintendo GameCube.
“This is Nintendo’s plan: make our existing game world better,” Iwata said. “For us, this is a passion. This is a mission of adventure.”
Iwata announced that the Nintendo Revolution will feature built-in Wi-Fi protocols, which will allow users around the world to connect with one another wirelessly. Revolution’s technological heart, a processing chip developed with IBM and code-named “Broadway,” and a graphics chip set from ATI code-named “Hollywood,” are being designed to deliver game experiences not possible to date.
“We’re excited to be developing the graphics chip set for Revolution, which continues our longstanding relationship with Nintendo,” says Dave Orton, ATI Technologies Inc.’s president and chief executive officer. “As the leading graphics provider, ATI is committed to delivering exceptional visual performance that enables consumers to interact with new and visually compelling digital worlds. ATI is proud to support Nintendo’s innovative contributions to gaming.”
Besides the obvious huge announcement that Revolution is going to have built in Wi-Fi, thus allowing it to go online right out of the box (provided you have a wireless router set up), one big piece of info to come out indirectly revolves around the Revolution’s backward compatibility. If the system is indeed backwards compabatible, regardless of how different it may be to play, you’ll still be able to play ‘regular’ games, or any game made in today’s style. As Revolutionary as the new console may be, traditional gamers will not be alienated by the long time video game maker.
i can care less about consoles, but portable consoles I like, and a portable consol that is more powerful then a regular consol? SWEET.
I still can't believe the PSP is more powerful then the PS2. It just blows my mind...
I also wish I had money to buy games for my Gamecube.
I still want a PSP.

I wonder if they fixed the unexpected disc ejection problems yet. If you tilt the device suddenly, it forcefully ejects the disc with enough force to send it across the room... while still spinning.
Apparently the battery life sucks if you play a game that uses the 3D capabilities. Sucks as in 2 or 3 hours. This doesn't surprise me though. 3D hardware is power-intensive.

Muahahahahahahaha!!
Backwards compatible. Two words, that'll make me buy the darn thing. :) 'tis a great thing not having to waste me' GameCube -games...
I agree, then I can give my gamecube to my brother so he'll be able to play all the gamecube games we got.
NIntendos version of XBox live but FREE!!!!
I can only imagine how the DS will link up to the Revolution, the possibilities make me want to pee myself!!!
And how can we forget the new ZELDA!!!
THAT TRAILER LOOKS AMAZING!!!!!!!!
Sidenote did you guys hear about how as a bonus for pre-ordering the game you get a remake of Wind Waker in new Zeldas graphics engine? SWEET!!!
THIS ROCKS!!!!!!!!

I'm all in for the new Zelda, looks amazing, granted, meaning that It's a must buy when it comes out. No matter what my financial status is at that time...
Nevertheless, the remade Wind Waker -thing sounds like April Fools to me... It didn't say that Preorders begin at the first of April, wherever it was that you read it, did it? ...But I'll be jumpin' all over the place if it's true.
Also, the PSP was designed by Sony to be a "bus-ride" handheld, meaning short, quick games. I wouldn't buy one--I'd rather read--but it certainly is cool.

I have a feeling that is a PR stunt to cover up the design flaw. The nintendo DS is on par with the 64 yet has a much longer battery life.

Actually, all of the games available on release for PSP were geared towards quick, "bus-ride" matches. I saw a couple articles on it a while back.
It hasn't showed up on torrent so I figure its still production? What da dilly?
I'm more likely to get a DS than a PSP, because there are rumours there is a Xenosaga game being made for it. :)
If thats true I might actually be tempted to get one myself, and so far i've been really against the whole touch screen thing.
Tried it at Target and it just made Metroid really hard to play IMO.
wait wait something just hit me what the hell happened with Final Fantasy Advent Children?

All I can find on the official website is a short note saying it's due for release on DVD this year.
