Had a car accident today

So today I was paying a visit to my local bank, a trip I've made dozens of times. The parking lot was pretty empty when I got there, but got filled up when I was ready to depart. So as I'm backing out I hear this *bump* sound.

Oh shit

At first I thought maybe someone else was trying to back out at the same time. Nope the other guy was parked! Either the other guy had a big car or that lot spontaneously shrunk.

Lucky for me the bump was a minor scrape, and the other guy let it go. Actually this was pretty good for a first accident for me, unless of course he changes his mind and our insurance company comes calling...

So much for unwinding on my days off :(

  • Two friends and I went to pick up an NES gun and Olympic Running Pad for some old-school gaming yesterday; we were driving down a hill with trees on both sides, doing about 20mph, when we suddenly lost control, fishtailed three or four times, and did a complete 180-degree turn before coming to a stop in the opposing lane. Had my friend not had the presence of mind to take his foot of the brakes I might... well, I'd be right here, because we were only doing 20, but my friend's Jetta would've been done for. :p

I hope your Insurance does not go way up.(Damn Private insurance)

Well, I'm guessing neither party reported it, which is fine.

That's how I dealt with my first accident. I had the bumper of the car I scratched repainted ($600...fuckers), and went on my merry little way without repairing my damage.

These are the reasons why I don't have a car.

i cant afford one. and i dont want one either
  • Ouch. But it luckily seems to have been a fairly safe one.

My first (and so far only) car accident occured 4 years back, with the company car.

I had passed a trolleybus (which was starting to accelerate out of its stop), didn't want to stop in second lane, yet needed to turn right into a parking lot.

Unfortunately, the trolleybus had accelerated fairly quickly... and the driver either didn't notice (or didn't interpret correctly, which seems odd) my turn indicator... so when I decelerated rapidly in the first lane... the trolleybus, while braking, slammed into the right back corner of my car.

Luckily nobody got hurt, although one passenger did fall in the bus. The car needed some fixing, but was fully insured. The trolleybus needed its bumper replaced, but was insured too.

The circumstances of the accident were somewhat difficult to argue out. From one viewpoint, if someone driving before wants to change lanes, or turn off the street, one must permit them opportunity to do this. From an opposite viewpoint, no maneuver should be performed which obstructs other drivers, for example requiring a vehicle driving behind to rapidly stop.

Given the circumstances, police decided to fine me with approximately 40€ (which I consider more-or-less reasonable, given my part in causing the accident). It remains my opinion that they should have fined the bus driver too (he *had* time to notice the turn indicator) but I cannot tell if they did.

Either way... traffic accidents are nasty things, and this was no exception. I drive notably more carefully now.

You call that an accident? Gosh, I thought you'd slid off an icy road or hit a crossing deer or something... don't scare people like this.

My 1st accident was on my motorbike when I was about 15.
I stopped to let a car out. He was on the other side of the road and wanted to cross onto my side and as there was nothing coming for about 1/4 mile (I could see it in the far distance, 35mph speed limit) I thought I'd be helpful and let him cross.

The idiot took sooo long to cross 15 feet of road that the oncoming car closed the distance ......and didn't stop!

He swerved to avoid the car crossing the road and hit me! Fortunately he had managed to slow down but the bike took a bit of damage.

    I hadn't realized anyone cared ;)

I guess normally I'd let this one go without a second thought, but for the past couple of days I've been plagued by small troubles and annoyances. Londo put it best when he said "I'm being nibbled to death by cats."

But if the other guy had pressed the matter, those kitties would have quickly turned into tigers. Both my dad and my brother have had "minor" scrapes in the last 5 years... one more and I can just sit back and watch the "Premiums" shuttle soar

Next time I'm just gonna walk to the damn bank.
