Rangers......

JamboJambo Scriptkiddie
A post by JMS on rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated

The SciFi Channel has indicated that it's moving away from space shows, with
all the hardware/alien stuff that goes with it. (This as per its recent
announcement about upcoming shows.)

So it looks like Rangers isn't going to go ahead. They haven't said it
directly, but networks never do.

Why would the SCI-FI channel move away from space shows? They're doing a DUNE miniseries, and then there's Farscape. I find that very hard to believe.

Are you sure the date for that post wasn't April 1st?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers part were true...but Sci-Fi not doing space shows???

Especially when their program lineup includes a new Battlestar Gallactica movie!

    Thanks a lot Osama!

I hate to say it, but I think JMS is BS-ing his way out of what was an (IMHO) otherwise bad premier.

It didn't start very well, got miserable ratings, and really wasn't accepted by the masses (who really wanted a B5 show).

Also, he is working full-time on Jerimiah now. How would he have the time to do B5LR AND Jerimiah, and keep both great?
  • samuelksamuelk The Unstoppable Mr. 'K'
Sanfam, personal opinions of the show aside, JMS (and others) have stated that the Rangers movie was quite well received, and in fact actually gained viewers as the show aired -- the only ratings killer was the east coast football game. West-coast raitings were sky-high.

I don't think JMS is ashamed of Rangers any more than he's ashamed of any of his other projects.

He's never been one to hide behind lies--I don't think he's about to start now.

Another post from that very same newsgroup, this is about Sci-Fi "moving away" from space programs
The network's statement was that they were reducing reliance on space
    shows, not eliminating them altogether.

Farscape is going to be on the network through 2004 and they are doing
Battlestar Gallactica again. But, that's a Universal property and Sci
Fi soon will be partnered with Universal.
I think that the primier for Rangers was quite good. I certainly enjoyed it, and as Sam said it did get quite good ratings. I agree that JMS wouldn't lie if the show did badly, he would simply accept it and move on.

Absolutely. He was very proud of how it turned out.

Also, BS-ing doesn't require lies. It's just pushing the truth behind a more complicated, often factual, story.

Now that I think of it, I have not seen the west coast ratings. I'll investigate those. (oops. Forgot a whole half of the country there. )

    Edit:
I just checked through the news bites floating around. Perhaps there is some pretty strong truth to this. Scifi certainly is taking up quite a few space shows, but could it be that they've seen a possibility of oversaturation and want to diversify a bit?

They'll have Farscape, Dune, Lexx, Stargate SG-1, and a few other shows whose names escape me. They can't be the space channel. That's already taken.

You know, no more new B5 might not actually be a bad thing.
I might be the only one around here, but I DO think that B5 was a great show, A great show, not one that should be poisoned with spinoffs.
I'm all a go for letting JMS work on other things, and letting us remember him for delivering us a piece of programming that was darn excellent.

Sanfam: BS'ing may not require lies, but I really don't think that JMS would stoop to anything even resembling BS'ing.

Even though I agree with Data Chrystal to a degree that B5 WAS a pinnacle of sci-fi production on TV and to us everywhere and hence maybe it should stay just that.

But I recall jms himself saying that there is so much more in the B5 universe he had written down before even doing the B5. And that he would like to explore that a bit more.

I would have loved to see the second year of Crusade. As in B5 the prequel and the first (and quite a bit of second) seosen was a bunch of unconnected bits introducing us the universe and the characters. It was later it went ballistic. And I would have loved to see the Rangers - and I have faith in jms that it would have been better then the really weak prequel (but I still loved it ).

anyway... it kind of makes an empty feeling. as if we are living in a dead world. as if all that is left for us are memories..

As Delenn sayd in the "Rising Star":
"It was the end of the Earth year 2261 and it was the dawn of a new age for all of us. It was the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. The next 20 years would see great changes, great joy and great sorrow. The telepath war. The Drakh war. The New Alliance would waver and crack, but in the end it will hold, because what is built endures, and what is loved endures. And Babylon 5, .. Babylon 5 endures."

...well there is no B5 any more. only memories. in there it will always edure..

maybe it is just my spring depression in Estonia that is yet to see proper spring.

Geeez its happened again... I go away for 2 weeks, come back and something happens. I think its a real shame that Sci Fi are making that decision. I found Rangers very enjoyable, it was a quality production, with good acting and some cool effects. Its a damn sight lot better than something like Andromeda... god that show makes me cringe. It really does annoy me the way crap can get through the system and put on the air with the impression that yeah this is a qulaity show, watch it. We really need a decent sci fi series with some dept and quality, and quite frankly I believe that the B5 universe is the only one to provide that!

Suppose we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

No, this current season is the final one. (Thank goodness. That show is about as bad as that OTHER series that I refuse to name because of its horridness.)
