yo people

I'm working on a logo for a not for profit organisation.

Thier charter is to basically to save the ocean, one beach, pier and reef at a time.

It has to be simple enough for any monkey to spraypaint placards with it etc

They are (obviously), called the Seamonkeys. A bunch of volunteer divers, snorkelers and water people willing to throw down, knuckle down and get down to business preserving marine environments worldwide.

I'm asking you guys if you think this logo is successful. I'd prefer it if the actual logo, without the words, stands up on its own...

one day perhaps it will be sprayed 20ft high across an oiltanker which shouldnt be sailing... etc... :D

these guys are cheeky, hard working but not afraid to get righteously stuck into the unscrupulous marine vandals

Incidentally... if you want to be part of this group let me know..:)

cheers !

I'd say it works pretty well, although I think that the logo image could use some refinement. It does not look enough like a monkey to further the monkey association. Perhaps you could try some slightly larger ears?

Otherwise, very good! I'm quite fond of the typeface, which does not display the flaws of the earlier posted "wave" style, while still retaining water-like characteristics.

I think it works well, although the mouth seems a little on the large side.

I looked at the logo, then your message describing what the corperation did.

In all honesty, the first thing that came to mind was a surf shop.
I LIKE the logo, but am not 100% certain that it says what the company does...

    i like monkeys...

its a good logo, I dunno if it really says what you want it to say though.

My impression of the grinning monkey is there people aren't serious. Obviously your group is serious about what they do. So something doens't mesh.

    Though I like the <!-- purple --> logo :)

R<!-- green -->C brings up a good point, it is a memorable logo, but it really doesn't send across "We are serious and commited" statements.

I dunno, an angry monkey might not look as cool =Þ
  • What about an angry monkey in a spec-ops suit holding a knife between its teeth?
  • A2597A2597 Fanboy
How about a monkey holding <!-- green -->explosives next to an oil tanker?

    Oh...wait... :D

Looked like a monkey to me, cute! And if you say they're a cheeky group, I think it works well.

On the constructive critisism side, I don't like the grin. But I can't think of what to do to it to improve it.

Now this may be silly, but have you considered maybe giving him a hat? I was thinking that perhaps one way to make him more serious while keeping the silly monkey look is to give him a formal hat. It's worked many times before.
  • croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Why would you have a hat while going SCUBA? Swim cap, yes, but a top hat/baseball hat?

You might want to alter the "a" in "sea". It looks a little too much like an "s".

Without the name, I don't think it looks enough like a monkey. The name makes it obvious, but by itself, it's hard to say (you should have posted the logo without the name and asked if anyone could tell what it was).

Have you guys ever seen a monkey grin ?

    It IS disturbing.

Yes, the logo is supposed to look less than serious, my intention is for these guys to come across as 'smiling assasins', not to be taken seriously until its far too late...

I'm also looking for ways to strengthen both the monkey-ness and the Scuba-ness... so please people, feel free to have a re-draw if the mood takes you

    thanks for your input
  • I'm a verbal thinker, I forget my own mother's face the moment she walks out of the room, but it seems to me that a slightly more prominent proboscis might help, and perhaps more Mickey-Mousish ears. Maybe show a bit of his skull above the goggles?

Well, unless you have seen a monkey fitted to scuba gear and released into the ocean, what's to say they wouldn't wear tophats while diving? Where else would they keep their snacks?

Plastic Baggies strapped to their little monkey <!-- green -->chest! :D
  • samuelksamuelk The Unstoppable Mr. 'K'
    That one looks better.

The subtle additions like the silhouettes of the mask straps helps a lot, as does the fur.

I threw together a quick sketch that was too complicated for a stencil-like logo:
  • samuelksamuelk The Unstoppable Mr. 'K'
Then simplified it (this is just a really quick 20-second doodle).

It's not polished by any means, and there's no real cohesive style to this sketch, but I think the semi-profile shot would be more recognizeable.

nicely done Sam... a tad grumpy for my tastes.. perhaps for the sub-group of SeaMonkeys.. the Ninja Seamonkeys, whom go about doing the black ops work, sabotaging Earth raping businesses..:)

Yeah, I realized it was a bit bland and "grumpy" after I drew it. I was going to try for a smug grin, but didn't quite get that far.

turn that frown, up-side-down, and you gots it!

Must say, you can't go wrong with a monkey as your spokes-sapien.

I prefer the nose of the first one, with the hair of the second. In the second picture, I'm seeing the three lines for the nose form a nose and two-lined mouth.

I think samuelk may be onto something there.

I like the simple design. Perhaps you should continue your design with a spray can. Keep it simple, and see what can come out in more continous lines, should you happen to need to paint it while floating beside a large tanker, :)
  • shadow boxershadow boxer The Finger Painter & Master Ranter
I was waiting for you to chime in... how could you not... being our resident monkey an all..:)

I'm still working on it. Sam's made some valid points which I'm trying to incorporate. I still want to maintain the 'spraycan simple' deal.

Preserving the spray-on stencil look of the logo is definitely the way to go. I like the style of the logo, and I think a minor change in perspective and some additional details will help. As it is, I don't think it looks quite --- mischevious --- enough.
