Battlestar Galactica Season 2
RubberEagle
What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
in Zocalo v2.0
Just thought i'd post for everyone:
Season 2 of BSG will run for 20 episodes, with all castmembers reprising their roles.
It'll start on SciFi this summer, so no 1 year wait.
That'll probably mean that the DVD-set will come out in the US soon, too.

Glad it's official though.
I am guessing it will start at or around the same time as the new seasons of SG1 and Atlantis.

You know I'm going to be in Vancouver next month, I wonder when they start filming?
And by the way did anybody else see this months Maxim?
All I have to say is "Thank the Gods!"
Strong points :
The hedfux the Cylons are using with thier covert infiltration and the flat out, out and out screwing with the contents of one the lead characters heads.
The nice carborundum grit and sense of adversity.
A modicum of good acting. ( Though in Sci-fi it seems you can get away with murder in this regard. It's a refreshing change to not want to execute at least one character/actor, point blank. )
CGI is good, and accounts for enough of the screentime to add the right ammount of credibility to the rest.
The supressed 'battle in vacuum' soundtrack to the Cylon attack, plus the nice ole fashioned chaoes of fighter class combat. I just hope they don't re-cycle too much of the 'stock combat reel' so to speak.
Bad points :
The Viper is still a dog. It was dog in the old series. It's old, tired and was always a wannabe X-Wing.
The fat cricket gunship is pretty average too.
STILL no bloody f#$%ing Corvette or mid to medium large combat ships. When are the writers and designers of Sci-fi shows finally going to get it that even in space, physics applies, so do rules of econmics and resources. There will ALWAYS be a need for ships from the five well established classes of ship, regardless of if we are talking hydrosphere or galactic sphere.
The preponderance of fighters and megacapital ships gives me the freakin willies ! Ok so that may require a little more set design, and as far as the storytelling angles middle weight ships dont offer as many story telling options. The intimacy of a fighter, and the bridge of a big capital class are good story telling tools, but puhleeeeze... if you want a halfway decent suspension of disbelief, stock your F#%$ing fleets and armadas with some well considered economically, tactically and strategically sound ships !
Those five classes are quite obviously :
Fighter
Frigate
Corvette
Destroyer (ship of the line)
Dreadnaught/Carrier
You can of course indesperse between those, the other subclasses like gunships, Heavy Battleships etc but the main thust of the arguement still remains. Middle sized ships are f*&%ing important ! There are obvious benefits to having a good mix of sizes, firepower, speed, robustness and weapons and weapons delivery systems and sensors.
Remember, the only military vessal in the fleet is BSG, the rest were disabled/destroyed by the Cylons during the inital attack. The only reason BSG was spared was the fact its hardware was outdated and it was not in the vacinity of homeworld. Since the Galatica was on its decomissioning run in a peace-time situation, its unlikely it would have any signifigant escort.

Ooo... I have no idea why but something just popped up in my woeful memory...
Pegasus
I wonder if she will re-appear in BSG 2.0
RDM Has already said that the Pegasus story might be covered in the second season, but it wont be the same one we saw in 1978.
The predominate theorey is that the BSG crew find a destroyed pegasus and we see the what/how through crew logs and flashbacks. But they do find enough spare parts ect... to help them restock a little bit.
If she's on a gallows/decom flight then why does she have a full compliement of fighters ?, ...or did they explain those away as 'old junk' too ?

Galactica had a full squadron of modern (Mark VII) vipers when she was decommissioned. They were en route to another destination (Caprica?) when the Cylons attacked. They attempted to engage a pair of Cylon fighters, but the Cylons shut them down and they were all destroyed.
The Galactica is using older (Mark II) vipers that were set up as displays when Galactica was to be a museum. There is at least one Mark VII that Lee Adama (Apollo) was flying when he arrived for the decommissioning ceremony.

I'm pretty sure this was briefly touched or mentioned in the pilot miniseries. The old fighters were in the hanger to be part of the museum display and were put back in flight condition or not stripped down yet. There was also a quick mention about the newer models by Baltar were he says something about removing the compromosed software from the new generation so they couldn't be tampered by the cylons. It seems a small amount of the new Mark VII's that were still stationed on the BSG were not destroyed after they figured out what was going on, at the very least the one Lee flew in with.
Sweet!!!!!!
