I have heard a few similar situations with other potentailly non-threatening items, I guess its all about posturing. The event I remember hearing about was some kids as young as second graders playing "pretend guns" and they were expelled through some loophole law.

On the other hand, its a very one sided story meant to make the school out to be paranoid and clear this kid of any wrongdoing. Do we know the situation, his attitdue, or the past of this teacher. Its all possible this teacher has been threatened before and he didnt just toss it on her desk, but shot it there?? maybe, but the news in this country will always be incredible one sided and often quite wrong.

    Thats just stupid.

If that was my son I would be furious with the school for acting like that.

    Worf

  • I'd apolegize to the teacher & as a teacher that would be all I'd want plus a damned dirty look. I used to get shit for the laser pointer hehe.

    Rubber bands: the next WMD.
  • How about a 6 year old girl filling a baggie with sand, pebbles, and clover and being suspended for a week, and a Drug citation on her permenant record?

or another 6 year old who, while looking through his pockets for lunch money found his GIJoe's 1inch gun, and was suspended?

    Or ....

To damn many. You know what? I'm going to do a speech on this now for class...might turn into a rant though...

Dont know, the boy looked like a punk to me, Id nail him with a cattle prod once or twice.

I think in general were too lenient on children, and that some cracking down might be good.
  • Tyvar:

In many cases yes, but IMHO, the entire school system of the US, as it stands, needs to be nuked. Forget it, scrap it junk it, burn it.

Kids don't learn enough, hate learning what they do, and forget it as soon as they can.

Class sizes need to be shaved to a max of 20 kids to a teacher, teachers need to be paid, and beyond that, teachers need to be respected, to do that, dicipline needs to be given BACK to the teacher. Give them a belt for use in disciplining kids.

Abolish stadardized testing. One standardized test a year. Get rid of this whole "Grading for funding" crap. No more grading schools. As it stands, schools get more money for doing well, less for doing poor, so how do you get better without money? Faugh.

Get rid of additional funding for labeled kids. This here is a MASSIVE problem. Ok look, johnny 6 year old can't sit still for 5 hours, lets label him ADHD for more funding and put him on ritalin, and make him a druggie before he hits puberty!

Gah...American public schools make me sick, physically ill. Glad I never had to go to them. Best gift my parents could give me aside from life itself.
  • Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
Sometimes I think that schools forget that the primary purpose is to "educate" the student. It seems that they more and more beleive "expulsion" and "suspension" are ways that a student actually learns. I fail to know of any scientific evidence that points to "less school equals more learning."

Make sure every student is challenged even though they may be at different capabilities.
In my experience with high school, there is nothing worse than a College Prep (mid-level) class, especially because they combine CP and Standard (low-level) in many courses. There are so many courses (American Cinema and Literature of the Fantastic, for example) that were simply excruciating because, although the coursework was interesting, jocks and druggies would sign up thinking it to be a do-nothing course.

I'd also agree with the argument to get rid of the grading system; college application should be based upon SAT/ACT scores, community service, interviews, etc, not upon a student's willingness to learn by rote and regurgitate facts on paper.

WOW.... Thats like dumb.... I know a girl who punched her Teacher in the head(and left bumbs), and got into less shit then this kid.

I was thinking more like, throw 33 kids and one adult into a room and let them sort it out...

Oh wait... They're already doing that...
