I'm curious to know how detailed this flight sim is (as in control and such)

In the mean time, I'll just stick with Freelancer... it's so much nicer to aim with a mouse. :D It's also easier to lead the guns the way it's done in Freelancer than to tilt the entire ship as you see in most space shooters. Mmmmh... miniguns. ;)
give me a joystick anyday of the week.
Only downside of that X52...I think they've ditched the rudder rocker switch on the back of the throttle, and gone back to the twisting stick...bleah. the rocker switch allowed such better control!
I'm sticking with my X45 for now...if it ain't broke
Still, for targetting I prefer the mouse. It just so happens that targetting and flying are linked together in Freelancer.
For flying on the other hand the mouse definitely sucks. :D
I'm playing through Freelancer right now and I found the controls a bit odd at first but you get used to it and it's not that bad.
funny story. I was at GenCon in Milwauke a couple of years ago (last year it was in Milwauke anyway) and the guys making Freelancer were there. So I got to talk to them and play a preview of the game well before it came out and I asked them about joystick flight because at the time I was big Jumpgate player and I used a joystick for flight in that game (a Saitek cyborg at the time). I even mentioned that I played jumpgate and they got all excited and asked what my pilot name was, so I told them SpiritOne. They got real quiet.
It just so happens that they played Jumpgate and even usesd it for a bit of inspiration. Except they played on the Octavian side, I was Quantar and I was a BIG PvP pilot. I had about 500 total kills when I left (if you check out statistics, total kills you can see even now thats quite a lot I was in the top 10). Apparently I also had killed them, alot. The conversation went downhill from there. Basically from what I gather me and the entire AQM squad are to blame for that being a mouse driven game, they find it easier to target that way too, and seem to believe if they had the kind of targeting they designed they would not have been such easy prey for me and my squad.
In my defense, that was a period of time in my life when I had just been laid off by GE, so I had a LOT of time on my hands because I was arrogant enough to think all I needed to do was put my resume on Monster and I would have a new job overnight. Overnight turned into 3 months of unemployment before GE production picked back up again, but those 3 months were spent becoming a very feared pilot :D
(Yet Another Freeware Starfury Sim)
Sorry...joke for all the freeware fans out there. :D

For people who are comfortable with mice it is easier to track a moving target on screen. I didn't enjoy Freespace as much and I may give both games another try after I finish Freelancer even though it's supposedly open-ended, but with the quite small choice of missions you get bored of those rather quickly.

Yeah, I know what you mean, been there myself and I'm still getting Monster's newsletters but I didn't get my current job through them or even an interview... Their slogan is still the best thing about them (What did you want to be?) but it's no thanks to them that you do become what you wanted to be, but I digress. :D

I know I'm getting on the OT side, but I would have a little question concerning that nice looking Joystick: Are the specifications imcomplete, or is it true that this really nice and fancy looking Joystick doesn't have a Z-axis? Because a couple of years ago, I finally found the perfect Joystick for me, the Microsoft Sidewinder (yeah, I know, but what can I say? Never flew better before), but unfortunately it's not easy to get it running under Win 2000. So now I'm looking for a new one since a couple of months, and I think that one looks really interesting - but I will never again buy a stick without a Z-axis, it's just so much easier to do a little rolling... :D
[B]mouse pilots  we used to make fun of em in Jumpgate, Ive never seen a plane, sci fi ship, or anything else that flys flown with a mouse.

Try Battlefield:Vietnam with a mouse.I seemed to have sort of mastered flying a helicopter with keyboard and mouse although I crash now and then.My gamepad packed up a long time ago. :(

I still prefer joystick flight, and in fact demand it with a plane, but I can acurately fly a chopper in both BFV and DC with a mouse. Although, I cant hug the ground like I can with a stick.
Im actually a bit of a freaky gamer when I have the time (something I dont have lately) and my clan and I were involved in team battles in DC and BFV. I was always slated to be a pilot mostly because of my skills. I could take the choppers and run them 5 feet of the deck at max speed and zip inbetween the mountains or trees or whatever I needed to. You should see what some of the people type and claim you are doing when you fly the cobra the way its meant to be flown in BFV (hug the tree line and stay below the trees, then pop up send out a volley of fire and drop back down before they can retaliate).
The only thing I wasnt that good at piloting are the larger slower moving Russian copters in BFV, they moved like pigs sometimes making them impossible to use, the huey gunships were my favorite though.
I'm addicted to them in DC and the assortment of mods based off of it. While I am not perfect, I'm getting there ;) If I had a joystick, i'd probably be set all other flight, but that'll have to come later. I'm horrendous in anything but the choppers. Much crashing is had.
Though with the mouse, I always find myself having a hard time landing choppers. It's very hard to get them lined up properly and stop motion at the proper speed. Often, I find my ride rolling over in one direction or another. It's really quite annoying, and if it keeps on rolling, will usually cause the death of myself and those around me. :D
I also wish DC had enabled choppers with wheels to roll properly, but that's what the other mods are for, I guess. It's really hard at times to get one down from the sky in a fast-paced battle, only to tap the front wheel while in motion and flip end-over-end.
The trick with landing the copters with a mouse is to stop your forward motion, I find if you pitch the nose up and throttle back to 1/4 you stop and drop at a controlled rate. Then you level yourself off and bring the throttle down to 0 slowly (or if its on a repair pad, Ill drop it faster and do a little damage to the ship if only to get on the ground quicker).
I think what took me longest to get down was hovering within the flags sphere of influence. Especially with enemy fire coming in on the helo.
Another thing that took me a little bit to learn was how to render the VC's heat seeking missile useless. IF (and thats a big if) your flying above the trees and are unable to duck down under cover you have to fly at angles. Never go straight when your way up the air, always fly at angles, the properties of the missile are kind strange and if you can make it go past you, it wont turn around.
Remember, the flight model may be "modeled" after how a helicopter flys, but inside the game world your not bound by normal physics and you can do some pretty tricked out stuff with those helos. Like flying under bridges and landing on huts.
[B]Nice, another chopper guy :D

I'm not bad.I have the landing near perfect then suddenly I suddenly flip the helicopter and maxdamage respawns in...Sometimes I can land that helicopter perfectly then the next time I kill myself :( .Never tried Desert Combat as it is way too big a file to download.
maxdamage.
It's freaking annoying! However, I still love flying them. And I'd highly suggest checking out DC Sometime. If you can ever make the space, it's well worth it. Right now, my mod of choice is DCX, which is a mod of DC to enhance certain aspects (weapons, vehicles, armies)
Heh BF is great haven't played in a while but I have seen the previews for BF 2 & Im absolutely sure it will not run on my machine. :P
DC was hillarious I remember one occasion I piloted an AC-130 waited for my teammates to load up. Then got as high as I could & went strait the hell down...
Was banned in seconds after the crash!
AHAHA
Sanfam really got pissed about that.
My computer should meet the BF2 specs but hopefully the demo map has a helicopter to try out before I get the game!:) HDD space isn't the problem just my slow download speed which is at a maximum of 5.4kb/s.
