Nasty Cold Bug...

RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
Anyone have a nasty cold bug going around? I was unlucky enough to catch this and have been on my ass since saturday morning. I seriously was unable to get off the couch at all. Fever, chills, cough, dizzyness, ears hurting, unable to sleep, ect. Not much fun, but today is the first day I am finally up and running. Turned into the five day weekend from hell. Just was checking to see if anyone else was unlucky to come down with this. I very rarely get sick, and never have gotten this bad, so it was quite a nasty little suprise.

No...but my housemate's computer got a virus. I being the resident geek, this was apparently my problem. #*@(&$!...

New rule: Any computer without Firefox and all the latest windows updates (Except for SP2) does not get serviced by Phi... As well, opening odd files that get sent to you by friends over MSN is strictly verbotten (it was webcam_05.pif containing a sodabot virus apparently).

    Oh and Rhett...hope you're feeling better :)

About a year ago I installed Suse on my parents' computer and told them I no longer service windows. They're still using windows now, but it's rapidly falling apart... Soon, they will be forced to either learn to fix windows themselves, or shift to linux. I'm much happier servicing a system that doesn't have constant problems.

I will almost gladly help out my parents if they got any trouble at all with the computer, because if I don't I have to do the whole work they would otherwise have tried doing on their own.
  • On the "persuading home users to consider Linux" subject...

About a year ago, the Win98 on my parents' computer keeled over... and while picking up the pieces, I managed to persuade them that Linux is better.

Since they almost never need to configure anything, and Mozilla / OpenOffice / Konqueror are nearly all the applications which they use... Mandrake 9.2 has proven quite sufficient.

No viruses or nastyware detected so far. ReiserFS filesystem has survived multiple unexpected power failures (but an UPS is on the list of things to install).

My parents are pretty much identical in use. The browse, they read email, they write documents.
  • I use Windows XP with NO protection whatsoever, and I've yet to get a single virus. :p

However, I wouldn't be particularly reluctant to switch over to Linux, provided I could keep Windows for gaming.
  • Yeah its too much of bitch to have two partitions on one drive I've never been able to get it to work quite right. Better off getting another smaller drive that you can use if your going to go linux.
  • If I ever decide to go Linux, I might make my 80gb drive the "small" one and go for something a little larger--BSG is taking up all my available space. ;)

Im still running Windows 2k, and I periodicly pick up a virus, but between Symantec and AVG running they get snagged right off the bat and obliterated.

Now to get the thread BACK ON TOPIC

:D Rhett, I cought the killer cold two weeks ago, it took me out so I missed my entire first week of classes. Gah, it was evil

How do you even know that you've not had a virus if you got no protection at all?

    Rhett: Great you're feeling better!
