Aluminum Foil

Is there an Aluminum foil that is durable & flexible yet still tearable by human hands?

• Maybe it's because I was up until 4 am last night, but I don't think I've ever laughed harder than I did just now. :D
• For building blimps, I have used aluminized Mylar.

Ordinary aluminum foil... I haven't touched for a while (except when opening chocolates).

Thank you, think that is what I am looking for.

• :D :p ;)

I'm not sure if that's the same material.

• ha damn how long did that take?

& who are ya we really don't know much about you.

Calculations on theoretical feasibility?
Only half an hour.

Getting the materials?
Some weeks (mostly waiting).

Assembly?
Four evenings.

Proving it too clumsy to fly in moderate wind?
Well, another hour or so. :D

Most of my blimping activities occurred back in 2002, when lightweight equipment (especially batteries) were notably difficult to find. In light of better materials, I have recently undertaken some interesting ones again. But never again will I consider it feasible to build blimp longer than 1 meter. :)

You should ask what I want... and though the list is long... it includes building contraptions which fly... especially if they are good for photography (another hobby of mine) or oppositely, if they are capable of flying indoors in human-inhabited environment.

I want a home/office airship, better if somewhat intelligent too. :D Autonomous indoors flight is an interesting challenge... because most machines capable of indoors flight are either noisy and hazardous (open rotors) or simply incredibly noisy (ducted fans). Blimps fulfill the criteria on safety and noise... but unfortunately, demand extreme lightness in construction. I have yet to build a *good* robotic blimp. But perhaps soon. Perhaps by this summer?
• Thats AWESOME! Really hope you build it. I also had a airship related idea but i wanted something that Sanfam tells me is not possible. An airship capable of carrying the weight of 1000 people.
heh

Always loved airships since Final Fantasy they had some really beautiful ones. I don't know if they have dumped the concept in the latest ones but I sure would miss em if they did.

My micro-chopper is only hazardous when I'm in a bad mood. :)

Nope, they're still very firmly entrenched. Unfortunately, very few of the airships in the FF series use what we would term "technologically possible" methods of flying. The ones that do use balloons of some form appear to be far too heavy for the size of balloon they use. In other words, they mostly appear to use antigrav (also known as "magic"). :)

Oi Sleepy... what do you use to bond seal and form your mylar ?

Also, can I cheat and use the shiny plastic foil wrapping paper from Christmas to achieve a similar sort of thing ? It seems to be very much like Mylar, just much thinner and hence lighter, and as you prolly know, every 1/16th of an ounce counts
• The sort of Mylar I used has a thin nylon coating on the inside.

When ironed at correct temperature, it will easily attach to itself (best to the nylon side, but also the aluminized side).

However, it needs careful ironing -- lest there be bubbles, wrinkles, melting or insufficient attachment.

Edit: darn service provider, crashed their server and "rolled back" all my linked pictures, including the blimp. Have to get my own box up and running again.

hmm.. What happens to a man caught in cold fusion reaction?

ooo ooo!

wanna try!

I quite like being nibbled by cats with their razor sharp teeth and sandpaper tongues.

;)

Aluminized Mylar is mostly mylar, the aluminum is only a very thin film deposited on it (sort of like the metal layer on CDs, which is so thin it's actually translucent).
• Nah that isn't very easy to shape. It ends up looking horrible and I end up losing out because I have to redo stuff from it tearing. :/
