Question on eBay

Hi, I thought that this's be the place to ask about eBay since most of the users seem to be at least rather well versed in its use.

My question is, that if you have a credit card (Visa Electron, to be exact. Has been found working in places such as Play.com and Amazon.de) assigned to you eBay account, is it possible to pay your purchases with it without having anything to do with PayPal?

I'm really not in the mood to bid for something and then find out that I simply can't pay the bugger who sells 'em. :D

Thanks in advance.

  • Probably it depends on the Seller's policy. You should ask him if he will accept it. Some sellers do some don't.

eBay owns Paypal. They will only use Paypal. So, unless the seller accepts other methods of payment (maybe other internet paying services) Paypal is your only option.

Yep, look for the VISA logo on an auctions payment options before you bid.

    Ah, okay. Thanks.

It just seems to me that the Visa -payment option logos are under the Paypal -insignia anyways, so I guess I'll need that PP account anyway.

This just means that I have to verify my credit card with PayPal and this means waiting for my credit card's monthly bill. And what I intended to buy closes in 7 days, so... :p

Nah, no biggie. They'll come around again.

Thanks a bunch mates, nevertheless. :)

Actually Visa Electron is not a credit card. It's a card which you can use to get money from the cash machines and pay in some stores which accept it. Like a bank card, but more restricted. The Visa feature on the card to my knowledge only enables you to raise money from the banks and cash machines in foreign countries.

I have heard some people saying that it would work with PayPal, but I doubt that. That would make it a credit card and they won't give credit cards in here unless you basically have a regular job and you are 18 or over etc. and Visa Electron is available to everybody.

I think you should ask about it from your bank to be sure.

So basically a Debit Card. Most banks in the US offer 'em nowadays, and they're pretty damned neat.

What's the benefit of a debit over credit? Why not defer the payment for 30 days?

What I can't figure out is why the rest of the world took so damn long to discover the wonders of the EFTPOS card concept.

Oki, yesh, Visa Electron is not an actual VISA, but it works as such in many places. There's only one bank in Finland whose 'Electron is guaranteed to work in i-shops, and that's the one I use. And I've confirmed it from other users, My bank's VE works with PayPal, I just have to wait for the monthly bill to get the verification number. :p

Cable3 Guy: I'm trying to get my dirty hands on a couple of copies of Jagged Alliance 2 Gold. I still don't understand why they didn't release it here in Finland. Damn. :p And eBay's the place to buy other outdated games as well, so that's the reason for me at the moment to get access there. :)

    No internet banking?

Internet banking? Definitely, but when any site sees my Visa Electron as an actual Visa, it means that the cash I spend with the 'actual' Visa are only reserved, not deducted immediately from my account. The actual Visa -transactions are deducted monthly, so I have to wait until the money is actually taken away from my account to see the billing information. :p That's why I hate the normal Visa -system in comparison to the debit card.
  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Wow, that's radically different from how my visa card works. :) Things get deducted immediatly for local currency purchases and immediatly, then adjusted after a few days, for foreign currency purchases. Interest is still done on a monthly bill basis, but doesn't get charged until the end of the next month.

My eBay account predates the the requirement to have a Visa card to open it. (And guess what? I didn't have Visa card when I opened it. I paid with money orders.)

Of course it has also been years since I last bought anything...

Just out of curiosity, Data Crystal, is it Sampo's Electron you're using?
  • Data CrystalData Crystal Pencil Artist
    Curz: Bingo. ;)

RC: Looks to me that almost every seller either prefers PayPal or accepts only it nowadays. So I'd rather oblige than be a pain, I can wait that one month. :p
