Changing wallpaper

I remember using a 3rd party program a while back. That would rotate threw a set of pictures I specified for my wallpaper. I was wondering if there is a way to do this through Windows alone.

    Not sure.

The wallpaper file location is just a reg key under current user config. What I don't know is if windows provides a command line tool for updating reg keys, or if you need to get a 3rd party app. I know that updating reg keys from command line can be done. Either way you should be able to create a boot script that randomly changes that reg key every time you boot.

How many shades of purple do you plan to cycle? ;)

    Messing with Reg... BAD!

I wrote a program a while back that did it by updating the registry key. It was a spectacular failure. While it did change the wallpaper when run, I was no longer able to change the wallpaper the normal way until I reinstalled windows. :D
  • hehe okay better not do that then.

    Purple? You mean porn. :D

It's built into the window manager on my laptop, too. :) Windows appears to be the only one being left behind.

it may be built in, but for some reason, wallpaperchanger is simply the best program I've used for, well, changing my wallpaper. Partially because it's so friendly and partly because it has the incredibly neat intelligent background color switching and great auto-resizing options. And then there's the fact that it only took one click to add my entire nested-tree background folder containing some 2500 files.

I have 1091 in my dirs, which actually surprised me greatly. :D

It really is amazing once you realize how they just accumulate. Stacman, who some of you may remember, recently discovered many thousand Digital Blasphemy and such type backgrounds in one folder...I think it was way into the gigabytes. I believe he didn't even know he had that many.

I've been collecting them for so long, but I never realised how many I had. A fair chunk of them are saved from APOD. If I see one of those I like one day I tend to save it. Apparently, they build up. :D

In my wallpaper dir I have 2066 files, 60 directories, and 6.67 GBs.

Need to go hunting more I guess :D
  • no clue, but I do have a tendency to click and save....but they are unorganized through two hard drives....once I compile I'll know what I have. :D
  • I've been using the same Greg Martin wallpaper for as long as I've owned this computer. :p

I change my wallpaper about once every 1-2 months. Occasionally a good one gets left on longer, but I get bored of them after a while and want something new.
