That is absolutely astounding, in the worst possible since of the word :(
• Between this and Jerry Orbach's death... talk about a bitter season :(

One of my old college friends was from Sri Lanka. I shudder to think of what she must be going through.

Oh and Simmonds? A former sensei of mine had a saying "The human tongue weighs very little, yet it's amazing how few people can actually hold it." Think about it.

Just heard. Not since the plague (yes, THE plague) has so many Swedish civilians died of any sort of disaster.
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
I feel terrible for the Swedesh people, noone will go untouched from this disaster (well of course I feel bad for everyone else too).

Some really neat graphics of wave heights:

http://tsun.sscc.ru/tsulab/20041226mod.htm

Notice how it crossed the Atlantic better then the Pacific and impacted Brazil with 10-15cm waves. Note that this is a model rather then actual data though so it might differ slightly from observed data.

Site was linked to from USGS earthquake site.

And I guess you meant that it proceeded to Atlantic better than to Pacifix.

Just watched a show on Mega-Tsunami's on TLC/TDC...

Very interesting...

Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma, Eastern Rift Zone of Kiluea Iki on the Big Island of Hawaii...

The mechanism behind Cumbre Vieja volcano is much more threatening in terms of time scale, but Hawaii has all kinds of landslide history just off shore under water as well...

Actually there's lot of landslide deposits in area of whole island chain of Hawaii.

I posted some nice links in my earlier post.

Wish I'd been there.

You might not understand my point of view, but I wish I could've been at the beach watching the waves come.

There's beauty in destruction. ;)

Interesting article. Any other sources for that same info though?

The weather has been doing screwy things here. Real warm for this time of year - almost spring-time temps, and lots of rain. It feels more like April then January.

• Its not that its depressing that the world would end...Its just if it ends like this how dissapointed I would be.

60 years of possible Nuclear Annhilation & we are all killed by...Mama Nature. :/
• I don't think Mama nature is going to do that. People have gone through plagues , wars, natural weirdness and most of us always survived.

Here's an article on what the quake did:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/13/international/worldspecial4/13quake.html?adxnnl=1&oref=login&adxnnlx=1105628721-XTBanV/zoOhKs7QNclOu4g

"Dr. Aster said that even in Ecuador, the shock wave displaced the earth's surface more than two centimeters, or nearly an inch, but the movement was too slow to be perceptible to humans. The jolt was much sharper in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, and shook the ground over a range of nearly four inches, he said."
