While I haven't found any numbers as high as 70,000 dead, most places are reporting at least 50K, which still has to make this one of the since worst natural disasters in history. Has there been another earthquake to take as many lives at one time?

The strongest quake ever recorded in our time killed less people due to it's location, but the Tsunamis from it were devastating also (Hawaii for one).

Here's a link about it, and there is a link on that page to the Tsunami info that was created by it...

78k confirmed dead.

Red Cross is reporting at least 100k after Andaman and Nicobar islands (India) tolls are added, these are still unknown.

Reuters is reporting that the UN believes death toll in the Aceh province of Indonesia could reach 80k by itself. Indonesia currently is at about 45,000 presently, not all of that from the Aceh province.

Sri Lanka is estimating up to 30,000 dead, up from the 22,000 currently reported.

This would bring the total estimate to near 150,000 people. I would expect higher - perhaps even up to 200,000 in the pre-disease totals.

Almost 80,000 now reported.

There's been far far worse Earthquakes in history. I found from the net that in 1976 in China earthquake killed about 655,000 people and as far back as in 1556 in China 830,000 people got killed in the worst earthquake in history.

I also found this from one website:

"According to this page in our Yahooligans! Almanac, the worst earthquake in recorded history happened in the Middle East along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the year 1201. From manuscripts and illustrations written about the event shortly afterwards, historians have determined that over one million people lost their lives."

I also paid attention to the last part of the text which says:

"Earthquakes are measured on a scale of one through nine that was developed by two seismologists, Charles Richter and Beno Gutenberg. A "1" score means the tremor is only felt by scientific instruments, while a "7" score means that buildings have been destroyed. A "9" score has never been recorded--let's hope it stays that way!"

This latest one in Asia was measured 9!

We are finally getting reports from the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Just one island is reporting 10,000 dead.

BBC: "In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands rescue teams have still not been able to reach a number of southern islands home to some 8,000 people.

The Lieutenant Governor, Professor Ram Kapse, says that in another island, Car Nicobar, at least 10,000 people are missing."

At present the official death tolls from these islands is at only 300. Clearly this is going to rise dramatically.

Also this has caused probably the world's worst train accident ever.

If you haven't seen these, take a look:

Earth rotation shift and island position shift:

Islands shifting positions is very logical.

In that subduction zone plate of India Ocean jams to under the plate containing Sumatra and those islands. When plates locked that smooth movement stopped and started to store stress to break that "lock". Now when that "lock" breaked plates moved propably to near positions where they would have been if that locking wouldn't have happened.
I think that it was said on somewhere that rate of subduction in there is about 6 cm per year so to move that much there had to be lot of unreleased stress.

BTW, area of Finland has been "treated really badly" in the past, bedrock is full of cracks and faults and pretty immediately on the other side of east border there's one crack/fault where different sides are vertically "misplaced" (if I remember right) about 30 meters.

And some places in Oulanka National Park look really like some giant puzzle with misplaced pieces... but that area looks to be center of seismic activity of Finland even today.

Death toll now over 90,000.

Yeah, naturally the quake had an impact on the geology in that area. Everytime the Earth's plates move, that happens to some extent.

Death toll now just under 120,000. Specific number varies by news source.
• PJHPJH The Lovely Thing
Yeah, news here just told of over 120,000.

From my country there's still over 260 people missing and even 2000-3000 thousand people from Sweden. There were thousands of people from Scandinavian countries in that area.

Yes, two of the most afflicted cities, Phuket and Khao Lak were very popular among Swedes. Since there are were so many Swedes there, relative to how many we are, most people know someone who were there, and probably know of someone who died.

Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The Aceh province accounts for the majority of the 80,000 dead in Indonesia.
• PJHPJH The Lovely Thing
Those images look quite amazing.

Over 125,000 currently reported dead. From Sweden alone 3,500 reported missing.

CNN has bumped the total to a little over 135,000, and this still does not include anyone from the Andaman or Nicobar islands. Indonesia is also expecting at least 20,000 more dead from Banda Aceh area.

Well its probaly going to be over 200,000. Or would you rather me say what I said about the Madrid bombings.

• I signed the “condolences book” at the Tai Embassy a few days ago. I’ve also given my “fun money” for the next few months to the American Red Cross. There sure are lots of organizations springing up you can give to ~ not sure how many of them are honest. While the American Red Cross does have a bit of a bureaucracy to it I know from experience that they are trustworthy to do lots of good with the money.

I hope some other ‘Firstones’ who always talk open-handedness, benevolence, and charity will see fit to help. :shadow1:
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The NZ Red Cross is the one I trusted. As in the US, there are a lot of appeals springing up (news papers, banks, etc) here, but the Red Cross is the organisation I know and trust more than any of the others, even though they are legit.

Wikipedia is showing an estimate just for Indonesia (credit of Malaysian National News Agency) of 400,000 dead in the Aceh province alone. The quote credit is the of the Indonesia ambassador to Malasia.

This would bring the total to arround half a million.
