tonka 'fury

Knowing me this is addressed somewhere, but I'm too lazy to look at the moment.

How does the Maint Starfury pitch? I don't see any thruster arrangement that would allow for it. By my understanding, the Aurora pitches by firing its dorsal foreward and ventral aft thrusters, or vice versa. But the forklift only has one set of 2 fore and aft thrusters, so this wouldn't work. It could do everything else the regular fury can, but in order to get to something below or above it it would have to roll and turn its way into position, which is something of a liability.

I don't think there's a canon answer, but maybe it has directional thrusters.

Perhaps being used only construction and salvage work it doesn't need them or perhaps they are hidden that main support beam...

Arn't the maintenance fury's thrusters shoulder mounted? That would provide for the pitching without any problems, but then raises the point of "how does it move forwards?" I must be wrong about the mounting position.

Gimbals, just like rockets now. They move the nozzle to direct thrust.

Which point do they rotate about?

Perhaps these little buggers rely much more heavily on thrust vectoring?
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Well if they rotate about the center then, given that they all fire along axes that go through the center, all they can do is slide the craft. In order to rotate the craft (ie pitch it) they need to fire at an angle away from the center of gravity.

Yup, gimbals.
Take these pics of a shuttle engine for example.
In this pic: http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/IMAGES/SMALL/GPN-2000-000543.jpg
The nozzle is at center.

While in this pic: http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/IMAGES/SMALL/GPN-2000-000552.jpg
They have the gimbal vectoring the nozzle about 15 degrees. Enough for some manuvering. I think 20-25 degrees would give a Maint. Fury more than enough ability.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
That's slightly different though. The Shuttle has reaction control thrusters in the nose and at the rear. The maint fury only has the two engine pods.

If thrust-vectoring is allowed on both the fore and aft nozzels, then rotation about the x-axis (pitch) is allowed.

I haven't seen any evidence of thrust vectoring, though.

The only other way I could see would be a weight that moved position to change the vehicles center of weight.

To pitch up the weight moves up so the thrusters are below the center of weight. To pitch down, the opposite.

It seems like a moving weight would create an equal reaction...the weight moves up and the Maint. Fury moves down, but the up/down thrusters could counter that.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
From what we've seen of the maint fury, it uses the same kind of engine blocks as an Aurora class. As far as I know, they don't support thrust vectoring.

As for the weight solution: It's too overly complex. Gimbals or simply adding thrusters would be much simpler.

more importantly... what a great vehicle for storyline...

"Oh hell ! A saboteur has dumped a virus into the control firmware on the 'furies !... We've got no fighters for atleast 15 minutes !

All we have is the maintenance furies... we could up the amps on the welding lasers and get just enough juice to make them close range weapons...

You upto this pilot ? "

FWIW, in the game as originally designed there were a couple of missions early on that featured a "maintenance 'Fury", which I have always referred to as a 'fork lift', hence my ancient, lame challenge to take on fans in a dogfight with one, which is how 'fork lifts' got into the Firstones lexicon, for newbies, if anyone still cares.

In the B5 universe there are ‘maintenance bots’, but those are different from what you're calling a ‘maintenance 'Fury’.

We also threw around the idea of it being possible, early on while you’re stationed at B5, to be busted from 'Fury pilot down to "maintenance 'Fury" pilot. You get to spend some time clearing traffic lanes and such before regaining your seat as a fighter pilot.
