Ok fellas listen up...

The low down...

As you may have gathered from the rumours and cryptic Vorlo-chat coming from various sources on here I am attempting to bring about a full blooded fully funded professional Babylon project....

and by my count I make it number Five... so heres to auspicious numerology.

Before you go bananas, please, please remember the past and approach this with optimism... and level headed-ness. The Vorlons, you guys and I are all climbing once again into the breach...

and we may not suceed as has happened in the past.

Be grim, but carry the fire in your bellies.

The specifics of the why, where, whens will come to you progressively. Rather than lay absolutely everything out right now and find that it changes the same day, someone will be telling you what happens once it has become a solid reality rather than “ this might happen soon”. We’ve all been burnt badly and pipedreams and maybes will not suffice anymore, so the info you get from here on. with any luck, will be flat out facts.

Now.

To get things going.

The embryonic entity making this game needs to have first of all one thing upon which everything else hinges.
The braindead investor/beancounters out there with the $3 million bucks needed to do this right want to see profits, big numbers. Earnings. Which translates to one thing.

Proof of Market.

A simple statement.

How many units of NeoITF are we likely to sell ?

So “the Studio” needs market research, and the more targeted and related it is to SpaceSims and Babylon Five the better. Paying for market research, especially generalised and ‘globally’ orientated stuff is bad news. The costs are humungus and just how good the data is to one specific game like NeoITF is questionable. So where does a company with no money find good targeted market research ? Normally they don’t, they can’t, they don’t have a loyal band of 2500 supporters to appeal to for help.

Fortunately for NeoITF there is hope, hope because a dogged and determined bunch of nutters is still hanging on, still keeping the light on for something that by most peoples standards should have been dead and buried. ( I mix metaphors.. sosumi )

Very shortly I will give you an Url, an address to a site which has been specifically built to do a few things, namely :

Collect market research targeted at NeoITF with the intention of reaching a target of 20,000+ sample size, ( thats 20,000 people answering a ten question survey ).

Raise awareness of the plight of ITF/NeoITF with a heavy bent towards professional ‘investor shopping’

Give the community a place to make themselves heard in a positive and active way.

The part where the Firstones do some work is actively seeking out people to either fill out the questionaire online or printing out a .pdf file of the questionaire and going out into the gaming community at LAN parties, to thier game shop, thier buddies homes and bringing the data home to thier net access and filling in the questionaire by proxy.

Mind numbingly boring number crunching and data munging, but like everything, it has to be done. We need that data to make any progress at all. No-one will listen to me or anyone else without an indication of how obscenely rich you get by making NeoITF.

I’m hoping the natural competitive spirit most Firstones display will come to the fore...

To encourage that, the intention is to offer some real and tangible incentives to those Firstones who really put in by filling in the questionaire a gazillion times for themselves and by proxy for others.

Those incentives are :

A Firstone collecting more than 100 legitimate entries for the market survey gets thier name in the games credits.
A Firstone collecting more than 500 legitimate entries for the market survey gets thier name in the games credits and a free copy of NeoITF.
A Firstone collecting more than 1000 legitimate entries for the market survey gets thier name in the credits, a free copy of NeoITF and a cloisonne metal badge ( of honour ).

Hopefully with all that on offer the sample size for our marketing survey will climb into orbit. That in itself would be a powerful thing to show an investor. The current sample size will be displayed somewhere on the page so you can all see how we are doing.

Just remember that at this point nothing is carved in stone. You may do all that work for nothing more than good karma. Rest assured with one thing. I and everyone else involved in this will do thier utmost to bring this long held dream into reality.

The questionaire is plain text form is below. A proper digital form will appear on the upcoming site. If you think that there is any other questions that need asking or one of these questions shoudnt be asked... then I welcome your input.

Afterall... the way things are going this game will really be a community effort.

NeoITF is nothing with Firstones... we genuinely need the active assistance of Firstones.

Sanfam has also been gracious enough to give me a .plan finger to keep you updated with... look there too occasionally though I will prolly keep posting here for the big issues.

Ask any questions you need to.... and either I or someone else here will answer...

Go prep youeselves... rustle up some new and old Firstones...

and lets go kick some corporate arse...

Oh, goody! I told you something was happening!

EDIT: Ok, fully reread above post. Sounds good to me. Couple questions:
1. How are you going to track referals?
2. Is this a well known game company?
3. Are we trying to buy ITF materials, or start from scratch?
4. When can I start??

Thank you for putting in a fifth effort.

• Now this is work I can do. I may have to dig up some old contacts, but I shall do what I can to insure that the survey will flow throughout the XWA and SE4 gaming communities (my old haunts), as well as wherever in Ohio I can spread it. But first I will wait for something more concrete, which I am sure will come soon.
Oh, you have incentives. Hmm, I think there's a typo there. The numbers for incentives 2 and 3 are the same.
• shadow boxershadow boxer The Finger Painter & Master Ranter
refferals are tracked by the "collected by" field....

lets say Rhett collects 68 'hits'.... he puts his name/ID in the first field of every entry he makes.... followed in the next field by the person he collected the data from...

his tally is known to us and he is accorded his benefits when the time comes.

the Studio is a made for NeoITF studio, expressly built to start out with this game ( the future of the studio will be open from there )

The ITF materials thing is complex messy and who knows.... good question... you will all know when we do

Everyone can start thier data collection when the site is up. Be patient, the best thing you can do now is chase up those Firstones and compadres who may want to get into this.

Forms are bitches to backend sometimes.... it will take some time... but I'm working on it. I dont want people to start entering data which will dissapear into void at the other end so I have to test it well before I release it.

Language of Hope

as much as I appeciate your enthusiasm... please wait for the offical site.... what I dont want is the data scattered across a zillion servers all over... it has to be centralised and therefore easier to manage.

if we end up with six or seven collection points it will be a hedfux to get it all tabulated. especially if it the form work is not exactly the same as each other...

just sit tight... get yourself in the data collection frame of mind and wait for the starting gun...

Homeworld is about as close as I know to the fleet battle system in B5 and probably the best recognised one too unless anyone begs to differ ? Thats why that question is there.

I see your point, and I have that problem in mind, too. The easiest way would be if you told me how you want the data to be formatted (once you load that starting gun ), and I'll program the site this way.
On the other hand, it is quite easy to reformat entries automatically. So, again: No worries

I don't mean to piss on your parade (really, I don't), but with Warner Brothers keeping all B5 licensing in a lock-down, no one can even begin to pursue development with any hope of seeing it get to market.

There is a real catch 22 here. WB will not agree to even contemplate granting a license until a developer can show them they have the money and ability to deliver the game. On the other hand, anyone willing to fork over the cash to fund development, will need to have some degree of certainty that the license is obtainable -which it curently isn't.

Shadow,

Is that questionnaire an example, or are those questions you want to ask.

The reason I ask is because I have had some experience in market research including surveys and focus groups. You have to be careful about the questions and anticipate certain answers that a person would give. An example would be the question about packaging. If you read the question as it’s written almost everybody will select the second choice, due to cheaper price. Where as the reality would be that the customer may gravitate toward the glossy boxes, even though they said they'd be willing to buy a jewel cased game.

Also, would there be an incentive for a person to answer the questionnaire?

SB, I mean no disrespect toward the questions you've selected, just thought I'd offer my experience. If you'd like some help in developing a questionnaire, I'd be happy to participate. A well design questionnaire is going to be important in helping convince interested parties that you have collected valid data.

shadow boxer: Time for some harcore honesty. You know man, I've never been really too keen on you; You swear like a sailor in some of your posts, you're damn hot-headed from time to time, seem to type like a maniac when it comes to speed, give absolutely no regard to typos ( ) and you really seem to take the whole ITF project way too personally. Don't be offended, though, it's just an impression I've got over the years and I admit I could be dead wrong.

So, now it's establisehd that the image I've got of you is a berzerk dwarf equipped with suicide-C4 straps+detonator & an axe running on pure uppers.

And the whole meaning of the post is; thank you. You have some good ideas, and for the third time(?) on the long run I'm starting to feel optimistic about getting ITF on the shelves. With a maniac like you running the helm, we're bound to get some major attention.

Sadly, I don't have any friends who would like B5, but I'll go over one of my pals when the time comes.

And about the questions... number 8. I consider my English to be reasonably good, but I just don't know the word resurgence. My brains' going in loops around something like a "health injection", but I'm not sure. Any light on the matter? Always glad to learn new words.

I think the Key word there is "Currently" Right now its not available, But with re-generated interest in B5 what with LOTR especially if it becomes a series, perhaps WB will change that stance, Especially in light of how well other genre games Have done.

Just a thought.

I sort of agree with what Marc says, but who knows when things may change... With a Legend of the Rangers series being a possibility, WB might just be waiting for the right moment to end their moratorium on licensing B5 products. Only time will tell.
