Joe is one of *THE* people who is in the know and would not say something unless there was some truth to it. I am now very very worried.
Biggles<font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
I'm really not very keen on those "B5 Bucks" things... They speak too strongly and imply that we wouldn't go see a B5 movie unless it featured the original cast, rather than saying we want the original cast used for their characters if those characters are present in the movie.
I have had my personal political differences with JoeD... but when question arises regarding reliable B5 information... I trust him to *notable* extent.
Since, when I sent my original letter, those "B5 bucks" had not been invented yet... I will have to send them a separate letter with my "monetary contribution", bearing the picture of a cute Minbari. :)
The B5 Bucks were the creation of the Save the Cast B5 War Council which is now in control of the campaign. It consists of some of the most powerful, well connected, and influential B5 fans...some who've played important roles in B5 over the years.
The B5 Bucks are designed to let WB know that we're willing to put our money where our mouths are.
And though they may seem harsh, talking in money is what Suits understand. Trust me...I'm a filmmaker. You let them know that their money is on the line and they suddenly perk up.
This is hardball folks. No different than writing to sponsers on shows to save it or make a change. The sponsers are the money on TV and that's what gets the attention when people write them.
In film, it's the suits...the TPTB...that talk money. We have to speak their language.
Word from one insider source is that TPTB have been watching the forums and have sited fans who say they'll see the film anyway as support for recasting...which has seriously undercut JMS' position and cut the rug out from under his argument that the fans won't stand for it.
We have to stand united and behind JMS on this folks...please.
This could be a great victory, not just for us, but for the cast whose hard word and creativity derserve to be recognized and given their big screen chance!
Yeppers. Go check them out! One set is done to look like a one million dollar bill with the cast as the photo. The other set is done to look like something that might be used as money on B5.

Guys, trust me and JoeDM. I am a filmmaker. This will not send the wrong message. It is saying I will support the film as long as the cast is there.
Now, if you'll go see the film either way (even though JMS might walk from it which he's seriously considering) then just tell them you won't see it and see it anyway.
Personally, I don't want a B5 film that isn't everything JMS wanted it to be.
Talking money will not get a negative reaction, it will get their attention...believe me.

I'm with Biggles on this one. This is not the message I want to send either. I want a great B5 movie and if the original cast will be in it, so much the better but I won't be ungrateful if it doesn't work out that way.
ColonyEarth, it looks like we're in a difficult position here. You said that the bean counters are looking at the forums and pointing to fans saying they'll watch the film, hurting JMS's arguement for the original cast. So thats bad. But then if we turn around and say no we're not watching the film because of the cast situation then thats also bad. If we fans withdraw our support then the bean counters will more than likely withdraw theirs and B5 falls flat on its face again. Rock and a hard place situation I feel.

Well, we know from the casting sheets that at least 2 already known characters (Galen and Lochley) will appear in TMOS - and the mentioning of a diplomatic conference on B5 strongly suggest that we will also see Sheridan, Delenn, and maybe even G'Kar and Londo.
I definitely don't agree that the B5-bucks send the wrong message - on the contrary. First of all, those B5 bucks are not meant to be sent on their own, but should be accompanied by a letter which shows the support for the movie, but also expresses concern because of those recasting-rumors. Telling them "You know, I would really like to see the original cast, and if you change them, I would not be very pleased about it - but will see the movie anyway" - THATS sending the wrong message, because it reinforces what some of TPTB think: That we don't care... or at least, that we don't care enough that it would make a difference in terms of profit. While I totally agree that it would be to harsh to flat-out tell them that we won't go see the movie if they recast some roles, we HAVE to make them understand that this is indeed an important issue for us - and that they may make less profit when they go on with their plans of recasting some of the original actors. Because unfortunately, money is the only thing that matters to them, and simply telling them "I don't want you to do this, so please be nice or... or... I won't like you anymore!" won't change anything...

how does that "suggest" anything of the type. just because thats what you chose to read into it, doesn't mean that it's actually being suggested at all.
For us to send them something that says we will only see the movie with the orig cast, is the worst possible thing we could do.

No one says "Hey, if you don't include the original cast, you can forget this damn thing!". We just want do point out, that IF some of the original characters from the series should return in the movie, they should be played by the actors that portrayed them in the show.

"All right, then let's just say it opens up the possibility. And sorry, but I just don't think it's likely that JMS will write a script for a movie with no appearences from the original cast other than Galen and Lochley. "
Why not? he's done it before, Or with very very limited orig cast.
River of Souls? Just Lochley, Franlin, Garibalid and Zach.
A Call to Arms, just Garibaldi, Sheridan, Allen, and Lochley
Legend of the Rangers, Just G'Kar
So why not think that he'd do it again with just Galen and Lochley, with Galen being recast because Peter Woodward's not avialable
I just don't see your argument that JMS wouldnt write a script like that convicing, cause he has in the past.
I just don't see your argument that JMS wouldnt write a script like that convicing, cause he has in the past.
Yes he has... for TV movies where he had a rather limited budget and simply couldn't afford to include everyone, and where he wanted to explore different themes anyway. Especially LOTR is a pretty bad example, since that was supposed to be a pilot for a whole new show.
But a feature film based on Babylon 5? I really don't think that he would do it with just 1 or 2 main characters from the series. I think it would be a huge letdown for the fans, and JMS knows how long we waited for this - I'm sure he will give us at least some cameos of most of the original cast. Furthermore JMS always said that he considers a motion picture as the opportunity for all the actors to get their big paycheck, and while I'm sure that he won't be able to include EVERYONE, I would really be surprised if we would see less than 5-6 characters from the shows.
Sorry I've been absent folks...I've been extremely busy with work, my own film and this campaign. I'm quite literally exhausted.
If you guys here want to make up your own version of the "bucks" I personally don't have a problem with that. We're asking you to act...period.
The "bucks" idea is a gimmick...something unique to catch the suits' and the media's attention.
The message is what you're saying...that if the script calls for the original cast, we want the actors who created those roles to play them. This, as was pointed out, is why we're asking folks to include their own personally pleading letter to explain their personal feelings and love for B5.
We have it on very good authority that the script does call for the original cast, and that the TPTB are trying to recast them. This is the reason for the wording.
The story you've all read is a doctored version of the storyline that purposefully leaves out any mention of the original characters and the parts they play in the film. This was done on purpose to make the fans believe that they aren't in the film, so that they could then use any fan acceptance of a B5 feature without them in it as fodder for their argument to recast them.
It's Hollywood politics at their dirtiest, make no mistake. This is why we're fighting back.
We've already gotten articles now at many major e-zines such as Cinescape.com, IGNFilmForce and many others. These Press Releases have also gone to the Chicago Trib, NY Times, HollywoodReporter and Variety. We're expecting more and more coverage.
Thank you all for joining in this fight. I am declaring within myself that we will win this one (the whoel "claim the victory" idea). My source has told me that they believe that the suits will most likely back off if the fan outcry is loud enough. So ...let's turn up the volume...shall we?

As i've said before CE, i have no doubt that you believe what you are saying to be true, and i've sent in a letter, but it still sounds pretty hokey to me. That makes absolutly no sense, and the Suits at WB, are not stupid, no matter what people may think, So why would not stupid people. possibly do something this mind-numbingly stupid?
Think about it, What's most likely going to happen when this project is announced. If its with recasts, then the fans are going to say "WTF Why did they recast. i'm not going to go see that" and WB loses money., the people who have never seen b5, are going to either ASK people who've seen it, or go looking for info online, the people whothey ask will say "its not the orig cast, its not goign to be as good.." and people won't see it and wb loses money.
OR even in a best case scenereo, Millions of people who've never seen B5, see the movie, and love it, then consider buying the series, only to get a couple Eps, and see, "wait, these aren't the people from the movie, WTF, i'm not buying the rest of the seires..." and WB loses money.

Poin taken.
My letter, accompanying the "B5 Bucks" explains my attitude in more detail -- detailing that I welcome new characters... but if original characters appear, I *want* the original actors to receive the first offer. Provided which, I would surely watch the film, and hope to acquire a DVD.
