Virtual Drives

Are there any free alternatives to Alchohol 120% when it comes to making virtual drives? Thats all I want, is to be able to play my games without having to haul the CDs back and forth between houses. Thanks!

    Try [URL=http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/index.php]Daemon Tools[/URL]. It won't make images, but it does the virtual drive thing. Nero ImageDrive does too, if you already have Nero.

    Actually lot of newer games make full install so there's no need for CD being in drive (even in virtual one) and removing CD check would be enough/simplest.

    The only reason that I dont like NoCD cracks is it can become a pain once new patches come out, ect. Thanks for the link to Daemon tools, Ill check it out tonight. Any other thoughts/suggestions are welcome.

    should making images cause any problems due to some copy protections you can try [URL=http://www.vso-software.fr/blindwrite5_english.htm]blindwrite[/URL] for image making and image burning. their file format is supported by daemon tools.

    as to gcw, they are fairly fast in bringing out updated nocd cracks when a patch is released.

    Yeah, just use Nero to burn an ISO or NRG (just change your burner type to "Image Writer" or whatever its called) and then mount it via Daemon tools. Pity it only supports 4 virtual drives though.

    Like I looked for SMAC Alien Crossfire on GCW and they dont have it... So this is when a virtual drive would come in handy (unless was the NoCD thing added in from a Firaxis patch? I didnt think it had been).

    Seriously? No I own both games, totally legit (almost payed 70$ for the expansion on ebay but found some kind soul on GoneGold that would trade me for it- only cost me a 50$ game, well worth it). I love the game, probably my favorite game of all time.

    If you set Nero to burn to "Image Recorder" and use the "Copy CD" wizard, it'll make a perfect image of it. Then just use Daemon Tools to mount the image and you're golden!

    Arg... well it turns out my SMACX CD is scratched... several small scratches that my guess is came from the previous owner... Any suggestions? Tried buring it over to a blank CD, no luck. Tried converting it to an ISO on my computer, no luck (gets disk read errors every 5 seconds).

    Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire uses SafeDisc version 1.30.010. [url]http://www.gamecopyworld.com/[/url] has literature on how to make a proper CD image to work with safedisk. Its also an old version so it may be possible to download a universle cracker for the exicutable.

    I would make an image and send it to you but it would take a little while on dial up :(

    Thanks croxis, I think I am gunna look into downloading an image offline... seems like the easiest way to do things... Frustrating considering I own the damn game though (and paid good money for it) :D but considering its my favorite game of all time I guess its not too big a deal :)

    I love SMACX. Actually I like civ 2, civ 3 and smacx the same for different reasons. Having civ 4 use xml and python to mod eveything from units to scenarios to the AI itself will make a fanmade smac 2 possible.

    That would be awesome, SMAC2... I would be in heaven. You know what part I really loved? The terraforming. True, it wasnt terribly deep of an option, but it still was fun. It would be cool to see it implimented in other games (let me know if it has been). But yea, downloading what I hope will be a real version of SMACX...

    I really loved to hate the Believers... Now Im Christian, but that woman just had a way to make me despise her. Obligatory Nukes were bound to come her way if she survived very far into the game :D And yes raising the ocean level was quite fun, just build domes on all your cities and have a little fun :)

    I always made it a point to kill off the believers first. They were just so damn annoying. :D But what's ironic is that they're actually the best race to play if you like war because they get a huge bonus to attack.
