The last time humans crossed space to a destination was the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. In the 32 years since, no man has seen, with his own eyes, Earth as that beautiful, solitary blue sphere, and - reality check - no woman has ever seen it at all. We've been only to low Earth orbit since 1972, and from that altitude of 220 miles, looking at the 7,900-mile-diameter Earth is like peering at a basketball with your cheek pressed against it. Yes, you'll see curvature, but you're not seeing the whole thing. We've spent 32 years "exploring space" in low Earth orbit. Exploring nothing. To stay in orbit you have to go 17,000 mph, or Mach 25. So we've spent three decades going nowhere fast.
• Yes, quite a good read. I had no idea that James Cameron had such a sence of adventure.

That's exactly what I thought. This article is from the December issue of Wired, which Cameron guest-edited. The entire issue is about exploration stuff.

well then I suppose we can slightly forgive him for the movie Titanic then.

Maybe he expected to die and then wouldnt have to film that crappy script.

he reminds me of me... but with access to millions of dollars..:D
• wow....You know, I hated Titanic, and in turn thought pretty low of the guy that made it...

This just gave me a load of respect for the guy. :D

now, maybe he can convince hollywood to make a Doom3 movie, but that he'll have to go to mars to get a feel for the place before he can film it. :D
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
It'd rock if that worked. :D
• Why stop at Mars? Get him involved in a Homeworld movie. ;)
• Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
Well, the first thing he would have to do is start digging in the world's deserts for the Guide Stone. Once he gets that, then he can start filming the space part of it.

;)

Not really if you take a look at the trend set for movies based off of video games. Remember "Wing Commander" and "Super Mario Brothers"? ;)

Heh... I think the "Mortal Kombat" movies were far worse than those two.:p

Umm...Sally Ride was the first american female into space. I think its safe to say that she saw it. Then theres Kathy Sullivan was the first american female to walk in space. Something tells me she saw it too.

Hey, I don't care about the movie. Just so long as he gets to go to Mars.

Read what he said again:
In the 32 years since, no man has seen, with his own eyes, Earth as that beautiful, solitary blue sphere, and - reality check - no woman has ever seen it at all.
The Earth isn't a solitary blue sphere when you're looking at it from orbit. It's half your view. Last time I checked, no woman had left low earth orbit, only the men who went to the Moon on the Apollo missions.

Excellent article, and great to finally see a satisfying explanation for why such a talented filmmaker would do Titanic.
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
James Cameron has always been my favorite director- I mean he made Aliens, Terminators 1 and 2- the guy is a genius :D

EDIT: And True Lies, which was just brilliant
