Waking up this morning I kinda got a bad thought in my head. If the brain can shut down as in sleep where we lose consciousness & are pretty much in the void than what happens in death? To me it means that real death is possible not just physical death but death of the soul. What if you fell asleep & never woke up? Thats pretty scary & almost unfathomable. Not saying there isn't a heaven or a hell just that well if there isn't. :(

if there is, well...better pray your headed to heaven and not hell. :D

There is dispute within the Christian faith as to whether the flaming hell really exists as we think about it.
The eternal lake of fire that is reserved punishment for the Anti Christ, False Prophet, and those with the Mark of the Beast in the end times is not the same thing as the Hell we think of (or is abused upon others in personal judgement).
The true death (second or spiritual death) and true hell, are existence without God. A dark place where you exist, without help, without spiritual sustinence, and without love.
And this is what I believe Hell to be, not that Hollywood version that has come into popular myth.
God giving us Free Will demands that he answer in kind because of his own nature having to fulfill a promise he makes. The warning of "Be careful what you wish for, because you might get it" comes into play here. You don't believe in going to Heaven, you don't believe you exist after death, etc, these are request to live without God in your life, and that is Hell IMHO.
The parable of the rich man pointed out the then current understanding of Hell of the time, as a great canyon upon which one side was Hades and the other was Paradise.
If you take for granted the idea that Jesus prevailed over the enemy and freed the captives from both Hell and Paradise, and took them with him to heaven at the end of the 3 days, then you can see how Hell has no influence in current affairs.
When Christ told the thief on the cross next to him that "this day, you will be with me in Paradise", it meant that both would be there upon their death, until Christ prevailed. From that point on (when Christ ascended), to be absent from the body, is to be present with the lord. Paradise now exists in Heaven.
We often think way too linear in our approach to time and space. God does not exists soley in this realm, but within and without. Eternity is a timeless place which within has been established a structure that WE are bound to, and can only escape at death.
Dimensions if you will...
So, in short, I think there is still a Hell, I don't know what exactly that will be like other then we will be COMPLEATLY seperated from God. Which is a scary thought to me...
@Jack I understand your interpretation at least I think I do. From what I read you believe that hell has been defeated already? That the sinners in hell are redeemed but that was over 2000 thousand years ago what about all the baddies afterward?
Yes. Yes, and between Christ's ressurection/ascention and his return is a grace period for man to accept his gift. Those that die in this time period are not judged until Christ comes back to rule. Those that accepted his gift will be judged also, by the work they did or din't do in his name.
This is important to differentiate the gift of salvation from the works. Many will be saved by the skin of their teeth, which means that they are saved, but did not do much with it while on Earth in flesh.
This is of course one interpretation. It's one that makes sense to me, and so I believe it.
