The Software Disc...

I think I told you guys once that once I got the whole shebang in working orderr, I'd post a list of my internet links to D/L the software... well, it's a big one but here goes. :)

If someone finds any good additions, feel free to post them, of course.

Hope someone finds something useful in these, I sure 'ave. ;)

In addition to these, I've got a number of files not so easily available on the 'net and some disk backups to use.

Soo... what I'd still need are:

1. A good, complete freeware media player (Zoom player went bad)

2. All Windows OS' .wpl -file viewer.

3. A working Win XP -wpa.dbl -file editor. (Activation hacks or rounders accepted as well. I don't endorse software piracy, just the ability to use the software that you've bought. :p)

4. Good freeware FTP -program

Any suggestions.

I use BSPlayer and Winamp combo.
(Winamp = audio, BSPlayer = video)

No Kazaa Lite Mega Codec Pack?

With that and the included Media Player Classic you'll be able to play just about everything, including DVD's
  • first, get rid of the logitech drivers. logitech makes good hardware but their software is among the worse out there. i run the wireless keyboard/mouse without drivers without a problem but as soon as i install drivers it crahes the computer every hour.

as for ftp theres filezilla or what i love to use when it comes to sftp/ssh putty&psftp (both in the download section there)

Why you need Java Software Development Kit?

Also I would prefer Sygate as firewall.

    7 zip lacks ACE-format completely.

And you can force Windoze to remove DLL's used by shutted down programs from memory, there's no need to use separate program for that.

  • by the way, unless you plan on comparing/benchmarking real high end pcs i'd go with 3dmark2001 ('03 was crap)

'05 can be boring if you have things running at 0.01fps

I have to agree. I have never installed the Logitech drivers for this keyboard or mouse of theirs I have. I run a 3rd party intercept for special keys (called HKControl) which allows you to use even a normal keyboard to do things like make a "always on top" button for a window. And as for the mouse...why a driver? Windows drivers work just fine with Logitech mice...and don't have lots of extra BS in them that takes up CPU time.

Dump Winamp and go with Sonique MP3 player.I've been using Sonique since 1999 and no problems.:robot:

And I've been using winamp since 1999 with no problems. :) I'm sure Sanfam will pop up soon and preach about foobar2k. It's a matter of personal taste. Hell, they're all so small, you could probably fit all three on.

I've used Winamp since 2001 and still have the original version. No reason to upgrade...if it works it works :D

Exile: That looks like it. A nice thing is even if you don't have extra keys you can still do something like Ctrl-Alt-PageUp to make windows always on top, or some other function. The biggest lack of the app is it only can hold 4 custom key macros - the rest must be one of it's predefined commands.
  • My Logitech Elite has alternate functions for all the F keys which don't work because I haven't installed the software, as well as 9 "media" keys.
  • Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
Did Logitech change the way their keyboard operates to make the alternate F-Key functions be the ALTERNATE mode, rather then PRIMARY mode that you have set EVERY TIME YOU BOOT UP in order to use the F-Keys normally and be able to access BIOS!?

Thats the main reason the keyboard I got I had to hunt so long to find - one that was made by a good company (ie Logitech) that didn't have those BS F-key replacements that overrode your F-Keys every time you rebooted until you pressed a button...
  • BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Ug, my parents have a MS one that does that. When I saw it I swore I'd never by a keyboard without seeing it first again.
I'm still using my plain old Mitsumi PS/2 keyboard, no extra keys at all. I like it lots. :)
  • Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
Yeah - I know the feeling. My dad picked one up for $10 becuase we had an extra system that needed a keyboard (when we couldn't make the KVM work with the pair). Well...I quickly swapped the old keyboard back onto the main system and religated that peice of crap to his play comp (the one with 20,000 operating systems on it). At that point I said: I will never get any keyboard that has "key replacements." I didn't say I would never buy online. I just made sure that the F-Keys had no icons on them.

My current keyboard has all of 7 special function keys: 3 I never set to anything, 1 I set to "Always on Top" and 3 for volume control. It's a Logitech Premium Desktop keyboard + wireless IR mouse. Quite nice :) - and $30 for a keyboard and a wireless IR mouse isn't bad at all!
  • It's really not that much of a problem... when I start my PC up, I press the F-Lock key. :p
  • BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Yes, but you shouldn't have to press it at all. :)
  • It gives me something to do while my PC is starting up. :p
  • Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
Frankly I feel that overriding F-keys is fundamentally flawed. When one boots ones computer, accessing Bios often requires use of an F-key. Interupting Windows boot for special options requires use of an F-key. These are two things that when having to hit the F-lock first are simply not feasible...especially since the F-lock resets itself every time it reboots! - and Bios presses have to be hit within a matter of seconds after the F-lock gets reset.

Further...it is an annoying peice of crap that provides no useful functionality and at the same time creates a headache for use of the OS. Alt-F4 (close program). Ctrl-F4 (close window). F5 (refresh browser). F3 (find and replace in an app I use all the time). F12 (clean close on a python script I run). etc... - this F-key replacement replaces all those HIGHLY useful commands with commands that run programs I never ever use! (and frankly, I have too many programs that I use all the time to ever asign them to special key combos for auto-starts: arround 100 I use often of which over 50 I use regularly of the buttons on my buttonbars)
