It's part of mid-Atlantic Ridge and there's always volcanic activity in it because Atlantic ocean is widening.
BTW, traces of ash from eruption has been detected above northern Finland.

It's not like Iceland doesn't exist anymore. It just so happens that a medium event occured that produced a large-ish pyroclastic cloud.
Now, if for some reason, say, the entire region of Yellowstone Park blew up on November 3rd of 4th...THAT would be the end of the world (or at least a good chunk of the US), but go check out the previous Volcano thread for information on that.
