"Deus Ex Machina" is a well-known literary term. It's used to describe when a writer uses an improbable plot device to write his way out of a difficult situation. It's usually something to be avoided.
Reconfiguring the deflector dish in Star Trek is an example of a Deus Ex Machina.
I have a feeling the Lost writers have something else in mind.

yes i know all that, but i'm actually hoping they were going for a literal translation.
Well, Locks episode, and lot of background information, but nothing that really drove the story forward I think, except for the hatch stuff that is. But the season finale is coming closer, thats for sure. I would guess ending with discovering what is inside the hatch..

They better start solving some of these mysteries otherwishe theyre going to start loosing viewers IMHO. Every episode seems to bring forward new questions, and rarely any new answers.
It has me wondering though...
Spoiler: What was Locke thinking about doing at the end of his last flashback? At least it looked like to me that he was contemplating something. His treatment of the island as if it is some god got kind of disturbing in this episode... I really like Locke, love his character, but he is really seeming to go off the deep end. I think we might know now who is going to die before the season finale though... Although they could really pull a fast one and have Locke die, that would be interesting. Anyways, thats enough ramblings. Oh one other thing, someone else on the OO forums (formerly gonegold) mentioned all of the religious references; and the fact that we now know that almost every main character has killed someone at some point...
Anyways, anyone know how many more episodes before the finale?
This damn show just keeps getting better and better. it sucks that the end of the season is coming up.
Spoiler: So Did anyone else catch what was said over the radio when Boone said they were survivors of Oceanic Flight 185? I had to rewind my Tivo and turn on Closed Captioning to find out what they said, according to CC, the reply was "There WERE no survivors of Oceanic Flight 185" Hmmmm
And i guess we now know who is going to Die before seasons end, Although, with this show, you never know, maybe it won't be Boone, my other thought is that it might be Charlie, who somehow finds the Heroin from the plane, relapses and overdoses. or what my wife came up with, was that Locke said what they needed to open the door, was in the plane, well since it was Heroin, maybe that means that Charlie needs to be there to open the door...
Oh and did anyone happen to notice a Crossover in last nights flashbacks? i didnt see one.
The two aisles Locke mentions are, you guessed it: 8 and 15.
Spoiler: Now this could be completely false; but a rumor has it that what the transmission said was: "But, we're the survivors of Oceania Flight 815..."
Actually I like that solution alot better... quite possible, I always believed the black woman who insisted her husband wasnt dead... We shall find out.

My guess regarding Locke:
Spoiler:
I think he is going to crash into something with the car...after all he is supposed to getting paralyed, and a car accident sounds like a reasonable solution.

Isn't the closed captioning for non live shows usually taken directly from the script? cause what i posted was the exact text from the CC.
Yea, some people were insisting that the CC was wrong... I dont know if I really believe it, I downloaded the episode to listen again and I couldnt tell what they were saying after multiple listenings.
My Guess regarding Locke:
Spoiler: The look he was giving at the end of the episode in his flashback makes me think he was either contemplating suicide in some way, or contemplating getting back at his dad. Either way I think it will lead to his becoming paralized. My guess would be a suicide attempt, thats why he never mentioned to anyone at work how he got paralyzed. If he gets back at his dad, he would be yet another of our main characters that has killed someone, which is an interesting link (Jack inadvertantly killed his dad, Boone killed the babysitter, Hurley via the lottery money killed his mother, Sawyer the shrimp stand guy, Sayed during the war shot his friend, and Kate killed her boyfriend (we assume) as well as injuring several of the bank robbers... Seems like yet another rather odd connection that everyone has.

Spoiler: I was actually thinking that it might end up being either complications from the surgury, since he left the hospital too soon, or that he's going to attempt suicide, or pass out from bloodloss and crash.

Was thinking on the surgery part too in the beginning, but cannot really see how a kidney operation can paralyze?
Maybe from Bloodloss? i dunno, but i'm looking forward to findign out.

-- One injured companion

-- One humming and light-emitting Drazi fridge (unless it's a really antique Culture Mind). :p
-- And finally his own personality... apparently riddled with fractures from the incident which screwed up his previous portion of life.
