(Worf) i bet there is a guy working for either valve or vivendi that gets paid to write new stories to go with hl2 delays
(wiseguy) yeah, i think most of it is just publicity making.. would be fun if its delayed though :)
(Worf) "half life 2 delayed again due to alien invasion"
(Worf) "half life 2 delayed due to a deadly computer virus finding its way onto the gold master cd"
(Worf) "half life 2 delayed after government considers it a weapon of mass destruction"
(wiseguy) "hl2 leaked cause employers held a hl2 lan party at home"
(Worf) "half life 2 cancelled in favour of lawn mowing simulation"
(Worf) no wait
(Worf) "half life 2 cancelled, engine will be used for lawn mowing simulation"
(wiseguy) "now with realistic lightning on all grass blades!"
(Worf) "choose from 5 different types of lawn mower!"
(wiseguy) "cut fine british lawn or the rainforests of the world, battle moles and other animals"
(Worf) "and the ever present threat of rain"

Wow! I've always wanted to try mowing a lawn, but just going outside and mowing my own has always seemed to much effort. Now I'll finally get the chance! :D

Man, I sure hope Valve wins.
  • the_exile concurs, shaking his fist in the air and shouting "Damn you Sierra!"
  • Has Sierra/Vivendi done anything good in the last few years? I mean come on, I could ALMOST understand ITF but to delay HL2? One of their biggest cash cows? seems rather silly ot me, no mater how it is being distributed theymake money, so whats their beef. They get to charge the same amount as the retail version, but do not incur the costs of packaging. Whats the problem?

  • It is the_exile's understanding of Akrovah's comment that he was pointing out the difference in the sizes of the fanbase for each. :p
  • Well, I mean, when the show was on it was like free advertising, but when the show ended they lost that, and I don't think they were ever really expecting to give it a great advertising budget. Some thing my dad made me think about when I was raving at Sierra. As such it wasn't really to good for business to keep putting money into something that really only fans would buy. And lets face it, B5 does not enjoy a really large fan base despit how much those of here love the show.

Same thing with Freespace. I would LOVE Freespace 3 to tie up all the loose ends, but I can understand why Interplay didn't make it due to FS2's pretty poor sales compared to the first game.

Edit: Oh jesus, I pissed off the Klingon

I have banned people for less.

As I understand it the problem is that they don't get to charge the same amount. Steam sales are direct to Valve.

I think you'd be very surprised how large the fanbase for B5 is. I have found fans in the most unexpected places and the most unexpected people, and I know more B5 fans than Star Trek fans. I should also point out that I only know one other hardcore scifi fan like me. Also consider just how well the DVDs have sold.

I started to get that idea after I read the second article, which I did not do until after I posted. But I still do not see what Sierra is comlaining about. It seems to me they released the intelectual rights for Hlaf-Life. Weather or not Valve said what they were going to do with it seems to be a mute point to me.

I haven't met very many B5 fans, most Sci-Fi people I know don't like it all that much, no mater how much I try to convince them. I couldn't even get my girlfriend to sit through the first disc of season 1. And could you believe that she hates Ivonova?
  • Half-Life has a slightly larger fanbase.

Because the more people who buy through Steam, the less sales vivendi gets and so the less profits. If Steam proves successful for game distribution, it could mean the start of the end for publishing companies' huge profits.

Then they arn't true scifi fans. :) Either that or they like technobabble and tight clothes more than a good story.

That may be so, but unless part of the agreement was that Valve must tell Sierra everything they were working on at the time, then Sierra is SOL. That argument of "Well they didn't tell us they were working on Steam at the time of our agrement" doesn't hold water for me. From a buisness standpoint I can see why they are upset, but it doesn't seem to me that they have a whole lot of choice.
  • WORFWORF The Burninator
Most of the scifi fans I know hadn't seen B5 until I talked them into watching it. Some just like it, others become true fans. Only one refuses to even watch it, one day he will give in...

Y'know, I was going to purchase the box in a games store, but now I'm really leaning towards Steam.
