If anyone has the bandwith, try downloadin the demo, it's 319 megs but definitely worth it. Haven't seen a better intro movie since MechWarrior 2 and the game is darn fun.

Have no expectations regarding actual tactics but take it as a normal, brainless, rush'n'crush RTS -game, and you're in for a world of fun. It's rather heavy, but the demo at least runs surprisingly well when there are less than 60 units on the screen.

I might add a few points too much as I haven't played an RTS in six years and I've always loved the style of the Warhammer Universe, but it's a fun game to begin with. And it looks GOOD! Try feeding a single Ork unit to a Dreadnought in melee combat... fun. :D

And yes, it really does look just that good. :) But in battles of such scale, I need to downgrade the graphics, surprise surprise.

    Looks good,

For only 18 quid I think I'll get myself a copy. Ultra Marines, lets go kick some ass. :)

there are much better places to download it than from gamespot or fileplanet, but yes.... very cool game. I like the fact that you don't have to micro manage the collection of raw materials and so forth, much better to make it much more like a military sort of operation and you are given what you need to do the job and then you can request more if needed.

    Don't be rude, Simmonds.
  • the_exile has always been skeptical of the non-traditional squad-based RTS concept, especially because of the new focus on it (War of the Ring, Dawn of War, etc), but is glad to see that it is quite fun, and helps to simplify micromanagement during gargantuan battles. Still, he does not enjoy it in the same way as he does WarCraft III :)

I like it a lot, and consider that I'm a person who hated Warcraft 3...

That, and I'm a bit disappointed that the demo has no Eldar, especially after having so much fun with them in the multiplayer beta.

    but meh, burn the heretic!

cant wait till it comes to the mac and i can recreate my own Marine chapter :)

    WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
  • the_exile was enjoying his max video settings... until he sentfive squads of Assault Marines and a batallion of tanks into an Orc encampment. :(
  • Know what you mean, mr. 3rd person. ;)

I started saving up for another comb of 512mb 333mHz DDR right away...

Got half the money already, might be able to buy one rather soon. I've heard that having 2 combs on a dual channel mobo speeds up the comp considerably, compared to my current 1 comb system. Might help the game a bit too, having a gig of system memory. :p

Oh, and if you're looking for a good go-between on graphics:

    1. Keep the texture detail on high.
    2. Drop the landscape detail to Low. (Let's face it, it's what you admire the least. ;))
    3. Lights, shadows and everything else high.
    4. Turn off Unit Occlusion. (Or whichever it was that prevents the game from rendering troops that aren't in view.)
  • the_exile has two 512 sticks (PC-3200) dual channeled in his computer at the moment, and is enjoying considerably boosted performance with said graphical settings. :)

Oh, and if someone wants to use the Orks in skirmish for the demo, try the mod above. They're fun!. :)

We can only hope that the game receives a lot of mods and campaigns and add-ons, as the game itself only has a marine campaign.

Snap (apart from the name :D)
  • So far so good. Got the game today and so far I've played the first 4 mission of the solo campaign. Looking good. :) The game seems to run a small tad smoother than the demo or then I'm imagining things. Only 11 missions on the campaign but... so far, not bad at all..

And the skirmish is surprisingly good, the computer actually puts up a challenge there, so this could have a bit longer lifetime with me than most other games of the same genre. I'm not much into multiplayer games when it comes to RTS' , but on this one... don't know.
