    well...

for my own security, I had changed the domain name away from linxus, changed both the login and the password. I changed the local IP addy away from 192.168.1.1 (also a default that every one should know), changed the channel it transmitts on (that was more for my sake, all my stuff was on the same channel as the neighbor and her unsecure connection was interupting mine). Yes, I am running in wifi protected access mode (WPA).

I realize your not trying to start a pissing contest, but the point I was getting at is, Im not a newb, I know a little bit about security, and more importantly, I cant imagine anyone bothering to try to hack my network, when Ive got a neighbor that leaves hers wide open.

Its like breaking into the safe when the mona lisa is on the table.

As far as cheap ways out to share a broadband link... I have a 133mhz Pentium 2 downstairs which is basically just ' the modems bitch'. I've got it hitched to an old 10/100 8 port hub and it just sits there all day dispensing webdata, to and fro, out to the network, which is plenty fast enough for my 128/64 ADSL link.

It's just so terribly bloody handy. Whenever someone comes around needing some webtime and they have thier own machine, I just offer then a cat 5 and say 'plug in', tweak a few settings on thier machine and its all good.

    (wireless shmireless :D)

See, while i was living in NYC, i had a good friend, who just happened to work for my ISP, and just happened to set aside 32 free IP addresses for me, but i needed a real router, the linksys NAT router i had, would not allow you to change the subnet mask, so it wouldnt work, what i ended up doing, is even cheaper than your 133 P2,

I had... a 486/25 with 8 megs of ram, running FreeSCO as an IP router. Man it was a sweet setup, FreeSCO fits on a single floppy disk, (or on a very small harddrive if you want) will run on a 386 (i was going to put it on a 386 IBM PS/2 that i've got, but i only had one MCA network card for the ps/2) FreeSCO's learning curve is about 15 minutes, once you figure out how to do it, its config is dirt simple, you can set it up as a straight router, or as a router/firewall using IPCHAINS or IPFWADM.

and its a great way to actually get some use out of that 386/486 and 500 meg harddrive collecting dust in your closet.

That'll keep the majority of the wardrivers out for sure.

Thats all fine and good, but FJ more than likely doesn't sit nextdoor to someone with a completely open network. Hense, my points about locking it down tighter than a virgin guarded by her angry bohemoth of a brother armed with a minigun.

Personally, I'd take it a bit further and lock the router down to the mac addresses of the NICs. Theres no such thing as too much security when it comes to networks. You might even want to set it up so that it ignores all ICMP packet traffic.

I actually had that done at first, but I cant seem to find the mac address to my pocket pc, and that makes it kind of hard to lock it down if I want to network it. And while your asking, how much can you do on a pocket pc, I actually keep track of my hours, expenses and milage for work on it, its a handy little thing.

for him though, its a good idea to lock it down as much as possible.

Where the hell did you get a Pentium 2 133? Slowest P2 was 233.

    :P

    Otherwise sounds fine.

I was wondering when someone would catch that. ;)
