Yes...I'm still alive...

Just surviving with no power since Saturday. (Shortly after the "YES! We have POWER!" topic, it went down for good, which I learned was due to a large Oak taking down the power lines...Supposedly we will have power back next Monday. Until then, THE CAMPUS HAS AIR CONDITIONING!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!! :D

• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
Well, who needs power anyway? What do you mean "computers"? Computers need power? AAAARRGGGHHH!! HOW CAN YOU SURVIVE WITHOUT IT!!!!!
• well...
My general patters (up until monday when cleanup began) was:
Study, read, work on starfury modelkit, study, read, add another coat of paint to model kit, study, read, work on starfury model kit....repete...

So, I'm well studied, I finished another book, and the starfury is done. (Even the drybrushing to add dirt. :D) Still have the decals to add, but that won't take to long.

But, yea, I'm bored. I'd give anything just to be able to watch a screensaver on my dual monitors right about now...
*Sigh* just a few more days.....:shadow1:

• I only get a screensaver on my secondary monitor... originally, it was on my primary, but it randomly switched one day.
• Friday....still no power...the tree's that pulled the power lines down are STILL on the road, over the lines on the ground.

we even got rid of one of the huge oaks (About a three foot diameter on the trunk) to open up one of the roads, but the other trees as STILL sitting on one of the side roads. I've seen one electric company truck since we lost power, and all he did was chop the wires from the poles.

*sigh*

Yeah... I think in Submarine terms it's called a "Crazy Ivan"... :p
• WOW....I have power!!!

We just had a virtual army of tree cutters, and electricians from North Carolina and Kentucky come through here re-stringing lines, trimming trees in the way, etc...VERY nice!

Soo,

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!

Is there any particular reason the entire state of Florida hasn't invested in underground power cables? They may be expensive to put in in rural areas, but consider how much it costs to restring power cables after every hurricane...
• some area's have underground cables, yes...but for the most part...nope.

and I have no clue why not.

Yeah I especially get pissed off at PG&E out here in California. They have this Ad Campaign right now about planting safe trees...

They give people a lot of shit about tall trees next to their power poles, and have no problem coming out and mutilating the crap out of them.

As if those power poles are that pretty to look at, and scrub the air and shit...

I think there should be a law forcing underground power cabline by 2020 or something...

Ain't gonna happen I know but...

the water table/ground moisture may be an issue with undergrounding power cables in Florida in alot of places I would imagine.

theres nothing like a flooded junction box to ruin everyones day

They used to do that out here too. Though in our case, it really was a problem. At our old house, there used to be pine trees so close to the lines that if you were out really early on a humid morning, you could see the lines arc to the limbs every now and then. It was real pretty to look at, but when you consider how easy pine trees are to catch fire and add in the fact that said trees were right next to nearly $3000 of lumber (fence) run around half an acre of land butting right up next to the house.....that had to be fixed pronto.
• SB: That's not a problem if the junction boxes (and the openings for the cables) are properly waterproofed. Just about every large (and many not-so-large) civilian and military vessel has several dozen junction boxes and quite a few cables that are mounted on external bulkheads (walls to you landlubbers out there;) ) and are exposed to the elements (rain, salt spray, the occasional - or not so occasional - wave or two that breaks onto the weatherdecks during heavy seas, etc.). Needless to say, those ships would have a lot of problems if the junction boxes (and cable openings) weren't well sealed.

Generally speaking, though, you wouldn't want to bury the power cables directly in the ground (at least not in urban areas); you'd want to have them in some sort of tunnel or culvert. That would make accessing the cables for repairs/replacement (and tying in new customers) far easier and would also help mitigate the groundwater problem as well. Most power companies don't like to spend that much money though (unless they have no choice in the matter).

And now a tropical wave in the Atlantic under investigation as to whether it has formed into a tropical depresion. This one is off the coast of Africa right now.
