ahhh...dangit!

Ever since the last format, I've had an issue where the PC will not fully shut down. The harddrive access light is still on, but it just sits there, doing nothing.
so, to restart, once it hits that point, I've had to hit the reset button, and to shut down hold the power button 5 seconds.

I knew this would cause problems eventually, and last night, it did. I guess I didn't wait long enough or something, because the boot sector was corrupted.

was forced to wipe C: partition and reinstall (No biggie, I keep most everything on D: Partition)

lost data on C: partition, and most on D: Partition...

Aggervating to lose that stuff, but anyhoo, started installing stuff, and now the SAME PROBLEM EXIST. I can't shut down the PC without holding the power button again.

latest bios version, anyone ever hear of this before? (Gigabyte nforce2 mobo)

Hmm... I have heard of this happening, but I can't recall ever hearing a solution.

Personally, I would try simplifying things as much as possible. It probably is the hard drive, but it wouldn't hurt to remove everything but the motherboard, video card, RAM, processor, and that one hard drive and see if things work then.
  • whats even odder is it works UNTIL I start updating drivers (Like directX, and this time it was the soundcard drivers)
    ...

    really annoying.

Sounds like it could be a power supply issue to me.

At least first download newest drivers for everything before trying next clean install.

Also when my friend's PC's mobo "cooked up" it started causing errors and corrupting files in HD.
You had change to make clean install of Windows and boot it up but you always started getting errors/crashes after (at time of) installation of sound card drivers.
