The U.N. Security Council finally passed its first resolution on Darfur on July 30 -- 16 months into the crisis.

Although it set a 30-day deadline for the regime to act, it didn't threaten Khartoum with any concrete sanctions in case of non-compliance. Without such actionable clauses the resolution unsurprisingly failed to bring about a policy change in Khartoum.

While probably effective on the rebels, the Janjaweed will have little to fear from the embargo because they are supported and protected by Khartoum.

A subsequent "Plan of Action" that U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's special representative signed with the Sudanese regime appeared to signal that the Security Council would be flexible about its own 30-day deadline.

The one bright spot is the increasingly energetic response of the African Union, the continent's new regional organization... Most importantly, the African Union wants to send a much larger peacekeeping force -- perhaps 3,000 soldiers -- who could do a great deal to save civilian lives, and it is trying to facilitate political talks between the two rebel movements and Khartoum to address the root causes of the Darfur crisis.
Does anyone else get as pissed off about the UN sitting in their great halls debating, signing papers, setting deadlines they have no intention of enforcing and basically just jerking off while people are dying?
The UN Security Council today begins debating whether Khartoum has done what Resolution 1,556 of 30 July demanded that it do

Asked whether Sudan intended to comply with Resolution 1,556 within the 30-day grace period, the Agriculture Minister, Majzoub al-Khalifa said: "It's never crossed our mind."
What's there to debate?
If some of you guys think the US has monopoly on hypocrisy, you're way wrong. Here I quote Kofi Annan on the speech he made on the anniversary of the Rwanda crisis:
"The international community cannot stand idle."
 :(

Like you wouldn't believe. This thing has been increasingly pissing me off since it started. It shows how fucking pathetic most of the world's governments are. They're more than happy to go rampaging into one country because, you know, they kinda think they might have weapons of mass destruction. But to go into another for the sole purpose of definitely saving millions of lives? Perish the thought! And then there's poor Kofi Annan, who's basically toothless.
Send in Lord Refa!
Refa Straped with nukes??

But Biggles.... Remember the other thread where we suggested giving the UN Teeth... Noone is going to give the UN teeth, because it would mean Nations would have to start doing what they are told to do...
Anyone what to bet on how many genocides its going to take for the UN to get some teeth.... I'll bet 100,000 Credits on 10 more Genocides

yeah.... tithe 10% of your military to the UN, perhaps only on a loaner basis... or... leave the UN...

Come again? I don't understand what you're saying.

I was sort of going for both. ;)
Iraq is a different situation, Saddam burned alot of his political bridges with other islamic states over the years, where as Kharatum is a member in good standing I hate to say it
You wanna invade Sudan? your gonna knock over Egypt, Chad and probably send all of northern africa rolling into the fire. The whole issue is a religious and racial issue which stresses across most of africa.
Welcome to a real shooting war.
Sides, the US is already working in Iraq, our forces are busy, people want to see something done get of your fucking asses, last I checked the US wouldnt block a security council resolution authorizing an invasion, so why the hell doesnt the EU or ANZACS start rolling?
Because noone with enough power to actually do anything is willing to do it and too many others are turning a blind eye because it's not happening to their race/religion.
I doubt the U.S. military could mount an effort to go into Sudan with significant forces. It's stretched too thin as it is.
CYOA: the only way any government is going to spend billions to send troops to Sudan is if there's something tangible to gain. "Doing the right thing" just doesn't cut it. But there is oil in Iraq, etc...
NIMBY: if a billion people were killed in Sudan tomorrow, the Big Powers would barely bat an eyelash. But if one of the Big Powers' citizens was killed, then that'd be the real crime.
As far as I can tell there isn't a government on this planet that isn't bound by those 3 "little" problems. If there was... well here's to hoping :angryv:
Just 3 little problems in getting governments involved in this. 1st problem is Sheridan's law: governments operate on convenience, not morality. The other 2 I call CYOA and NIMBY syndromes. Cover Your Own Ass and Not In My Back Yard.

Whose Bil Landen? LOL
Lets Nuke Sudan... To be Onest... Noone gives a flying fuck anymore... That fact was proven 10 years ago in Rawanda.... This planet is pointless...
If I could do somthing... I would attack the Militants who are trying it pull off the Genocide...
If I could decide Sudan's government would be also legal target waiting for airstrike.

That's part of the reason I'm pissed off. Noone is willing to do anything unless the US goes in first, and probably not even then will the rest of the bunch unass their bureaucratical hiding places.
Now show me the day the US decides to act and get the job done right, and you'll see this little FO enlisting as a rifleman.
Let just wipe out everone... Fuck it they want to fight over their gay ass belifes. FUCKING KILL EM. FUCK HUMANITY... Hanamity need to be wiped out for ever.... we deserve it.
