Olympics

ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie."London, UK
i was just wondering how many people here have been watching the olympics?

ive been watching a fair bit since friday as ive had nothing else to do really since being in hospital. at the start i was rather apathetic about the games, but after watching some of the events i actually found my self on the edge of my seat, especially the rowing, in particular the mens coxless fours which had a thrilling final with GB only winning by a couple of inches.

watching the marathon yesterday, with the atheletes running for about 2 1/2 hours i found quite incredible, especially given the heat out there in greece at the moment. it was pushing 40 degrees C just before the start in places along the route.

some of the sports there tho i found to be a little strange. for instance, table tennis isnt something id have thought of as an olympic sport. same with beach volleyball (tho i have no objection to watching the women in their bikinni's jumping about the court;))

anyone got any other thoughts?:)

I'm not really interested in something that's almost entirely about commercialisation now.

I've been watching it between other things...

However, I came across an interesting thing today:

The U.S. Olympic Committee, concerned that President Bush's reelection campaign is using the Athens Games for political purposes, will review a copy of a televised campaign ad that credits Bush with liberating athletes from Afghanistan and Iraq so they can compete here.

    ...

The word "Olympic," as well as the brand and concept of Olympianism, belongs exclusively to the International Olympic Committee worldwide and to the USOC in the United States. The bylaws of both organizations prohibit the use of the Olympics for political ends, as does an act of Congress, which states that the USOC "shall be non-political and may not promote the candidacy of any individual seeking public office."

The Japanese woman who won the marathon has probably been training in Japan, where they've got a nice heatwave going.

Playing sports I could perhaps understand. I don't do it, but I think I can understand the appeal.

    Watching sports?

What? There is almost no commercialism in the olympics compared to all other sport events...
