"Oh, It's easy to upgrade a mac because you don't have to change the motherboard of video card" Thats because in the case of the motherboard (or logic board as I beleive Apple calls them) you aren't even given a choice. btw, you might want to read this. It seems that its helped sb quite a bit.
I wasn't aware we were in a debate. I was stating what I believed from personal experience and from others what I believed to be true.
You want to debate? OK, lets debate. (Although I'm not certain what we are really debating? Macs being the industry standard, or Mac's crashing...oh well)
I have been a long time PC user, as such, I have much more experience with the PC then the mac. So, as such, anything I have from personal experience is rendered useless in this debate.
I understand that the graphic arts Industry uses the Macintosh, however, very rapidly, at least in this area (Tampa, Orlando, local papers) have recently been switching away from the Macintosh to PC's. (Most noteably, the Tampa Tribune). Just a few years ago (well, early mid 90s), Windows was not a viable graphic design tool. Programs such as Photoshop, Quark Xpress, etc, were not available for the PC. This of course has changed. The Industry of course will Lag a few years behind. It can't change everything over in a day, but the PC is becoming more and more the standard for graphic arts. The reason MAC is still dominant in the field is not because it is better, but rather because the programs needed for graphic design have just recently become available.
From the research I've done in just the past five minutes, I've seen many quotes of people saying they switched to PC from Mac's for graphics arts for one simple reason: " choice to switch to the PC was based on the practical need to be able to spend my time working, not rebooting." (J. Scott Hamlin) Your previous statement about crashes being caused by the user is perfectly applicable, but you have to relize, if you work with a program 8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, you learn quickly what causes them to crash, and what doesn't. My sister is not techno-illiterate, nor are the other people I have spoken to that loath macs because of the problems they have had with them crashing. Then there was my previous (Intended to be humerous) video, created by an editer. Obviously he had problems as well, else why make the video?
Mac's will probably always be a part of the graphic arts scene. IMO that is not the wisest things for the companies, but I'm a PC fan anyway. I know how they work, and how to solve problems on them. Perhaps my opinion will change once I become more experienced with Macs, but I somehow doubt it.
Edit: nice little Q&A session with Mac and PC graphic artist. I like how the Mac user prooves the PC user's opinion that Mac artist are pretty much living in the past. :) (As in, not paying attention to how PC's have improved for graphics editing in the past few years) http://graphicdesign.about.com/library/weekly/aa102397.htm

geez, i suggest you find something more recent if you want to give "evidence" especially since at the year that article was written OS X wasn't even out yet. a lot has happened since then....
I run Windows 2k and Windows 98, hell primarily windows 98.
And both operating systems crash.. ALOT.
Then again, I run em hard and put em away wet, I routinly interupt programs, alt tab out of things I should alt tab out of and as I type this I have at least 14 windows open.
I dont bitch about the stability of my system. I can destablize a linux machine in about an hour of what I consider normal usage for myself. But Im psycho.
Stability often has more to do with exactly what the hell the end user is doing then the system itself.

Hey, you made a severely flawwed assertion, and you got called on it. Don't blame me for getting your ass kicked in this 'debate'.
I have been a long time PC user, as such, I have much more experience with the PC then the mac. So, as such, anything I have from personal experience is rendered useless in this debate.
So you decided to bash a platform you know next to nothing about? Do you realize how inherently stupid that is?
I understand that the graphic arts Industry uses the Macintosh, however, very rapidly, at least in this area (Tampa, Orlando, local papers) have recently been switching away from the Macintosh to PC's.
What's your point here? That macs are more expensive? Just because a company makes a switch does not indicate that they suck.
(Most noteably, the Tampa Tribune). Just a few years ago (well, early mid 90s), Windows was not a viable graphic design tool. Programs such as Photoshop, Quark Xpress, etc, were not available for the PC. This of course has changed.
Again, what's your point here? Companies make switches all the time. Hell, the US Army made the switch from Windows 2000 to Mac OSX years ago when their servers were compromised by a worm.
The Industry of course will Lag a few years behind. It can't change everything over in a day, but the PC is becoming more and more the standard for graphic arts. The reason MAC is still dominant in the field is not because it is better, but rather because the programs needed for graphic design have just recently become available.
Again, what's your point? Nothing you have said here proves in any way that "macs suck". All you've shown that the indistry has changed over the years. No fucking duh!
From the research I've done in just the past five minutes
Ooooh, I'm impressed. [/sarcasm]
, I've seen many quotes of people saying they switched to PC from Mac's for graphics arts for one simple reason: " choice to switch to the PC was based on the practical need to be able to spend my time working, not rebooting." (J. Scott Hamlin)
Again, this says nothing about the state of the machine in question, what programs in question were being used, how old the machine in question is, how old the install of the OS is, etc. I could pull the same crap as "evidence" that Windows sucks, but what could that possibly prove?
Your previous statement about crashes being caused by the user is perfectly applicable, but you have to relize, if you work with a program 8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, you learn quickly what causes them to crash, and what doesn't.
Again, what is your point? I refer you to my previous post about user error.
My sister is not techno-illiterate, nor are the other people I have spoken to that loath macs because of the problems they have had with them crashing. Then there was my previous (Intended to be humerous) video, created by an editer. Obviously he had problems as well, else why make the video?
Ok, I've been using windows since version 3 was released. I'm obviously not techno-illeterate by any means, and everyone I've spoken to has come to loathe windows because of its "instability". I have seen numerous screenshots of blue screens of death. By your logic, I could use all of this to conclusively prove that windows sucks without any real proof to back it up.
Mac's will probably always be a part of the graphic arts scene. IMO that is not the wisest things for the companies, but I'm a PC fan anyway. I know how they work, and how to solve problems on them. Perhaps my opinion will change once I become more experienced with Macs, but I somehow doubt it.
Again, you made assumptions on a computer line you know next to nothing about. If macs are as bad as you made them out to be, then why are they still very popular in major graphics studios? If they are as bad as you say, demand would have been very high for a PC equivilent of the video/audio editing tools used on the mac. You're operating on a very slippery slope here dude. Be careful you don't fall and hurt yourself.

Check the date dude. Last I checked, 1997 was a long time ago. Computers have changed significantly since then.
All your Bludgening are belong to us...
:p
i'll stick with the best computer I have... counting with my fingers!
Definately. Although I hate it when my arm falls asleep...guess you could call it a crash. takes ages to reboot then as well...
Vert... if you try linking me with bad debating skills again... I'll make a lampshade from your hide.
Hey! I told you to comment on my new title, not Vert's post!!! ;) :D
