Hmmmm.... Filming on B5 movie, or something else?
JMS posted this "quick question" in the newsgroups:
Not knowing the area very well...if one were going to be spending a great deal of time in Hertfordshire, which is apparently near London (pity please on a
geographically unenlightened American), would it be better to get a small flat in London for that time and commute, or get something in Hertfordshire itself? How long is the trip? Or is there somewhere in-between that would be salutory?
That would lead me to believe that he's headed to England where filming on the B5 movie is to begin.
However, JMS has also said that he's been given an role (possibly EP, I can't remember offhand) in a project that he couldn't pass up.
Then I saw this little bit of info in an article posted to Aint-It-Cool-News regarding the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy film:
Filming is continuing this week and next in Hertfordshire, England.
I wonder...
Now maybe Hertfordshire is just a popular place for filming, like Vancouver or LA or Pinewood Studios...or maybe there's a big studio there; but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.

Wow.
That would certainly be interesting, no doubt about it.
Raarrgh! How can you invite me tea when my people have been ravaged by the
Centauri?!
Oh come come just because they like lumps in their tea is nothing to fret
about.
Lumps! Lumps! Those are mass drivers and they smash into my planet killing
millions.
My good sir you are being quite melodramtic. Is it tea or theatre for you.
AAARGH! I'll give you stiff upper lip. Come here! Come back here you royal
pansy!!!
That's... hmm.

I'm like trying to picture in my mind how G'Kar would handle Vogon Poetry..
Hertfordshire is probably just a filming hotspot.
*drools*
It makes sense to me... JMS couldn't turn down an offer to be linked with a revival of Dr Who!!!
and reg. the TV series thing he said, we have to remember he said "Network TV Series". There's no such distinction in Europe (well, at least the parts i know).
And I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't relocate for a TV series to Europe, as it would require him beeing here 8-10 months a year (and the traveltime should be much longer between London and LA compared to Vancouver and LA)
Edit: I think it's neither Shepperton nor Pinewood, it's Elstree Studios that's there
(now at least my watching all the bonus material and listening to all the Audio Commentaries on DVDs pays off ;) )
Edit 2: http://www.elstreefilmtv.com/ at the bottom, there's the address
Guys I've just had a thought... JMS could have been offered an EP role for the new Dr Who tv series, which is supposed to be in production now. Christopher Eccleston has been lined up to play the Doctor.

That does make sense, and would be totally cool.

Negative. It'd be a dream come true, no mistake, but no, it ain't that.

They allready have a showrunner/EP (Garry Anderson), and to take a lesser job (staff writer) would hurt his standing in the industry.
Also I think Production has allready started on it.
And it's made in Pinewood, not Elstree.
I'd probably think it was ridiculous now though if I saw it lol.
I remember driving past, when the had the Trade Federation Droid tank outside. :)
Leavesden Studios is also in Hertfordshire. Star Wars Episode I, James Bond, Harry Potter (amoungst others) has been filmed here.

Aha! The plot thickens!
I very much doubt that he's workin on Captain Scarlet....
I REALLY very much doubt it since Ron Thornton is at Pinewood working on Capt. Scarlet.
Ron is still a bit stung from JMS/Douglass Netter days...
;)
It came up because Sony owned all the work we were doing for Roughnecks, and they had passed some of our Character models from Roughneck's over to NDEI so that Netter could get a helping hand on Max Steele I think...
Anyway, the whole thing was backhanded and it reminded him of the days of Season 3-4 of B5.
His exact words are lost to time, but it went to the effect of: ...loosing B5 to NDEI thanks to JMS/Douglass was like (and I'll try to be as true to his words as possible here) "Watching your wife get F***ed in the @$$ by your best friend"...
It's been almost 5 years now, so that may be water under the bridge, but I'm sure the level of passion in that comment still lingers somewhere in Ron's deepest depths...
It was more to keep a lid on things than based in reality I think. People under the kinds of deadlines and stress these guys put up with daily need to get past these things, at least enough to stay viable and keep working without losing your focus to issues of rage and etc...
The argument was that FI was putting their better artists on other projects and letting the greenies do the work on B5. This may or may not have been based in truth, but I think in the long run, Douglas Netter and his son's work at NDEI came out about the same or less quality as if it had stayed at FI...
Just my VERY Personal Opinion... ;)
We all have our issues with the ST: Voyager show, but I am most proud of the kind and quality of CG work my co-workers did at FI for that show...
It was a very team oriented environment, and I don't think NDEI had that going for them, I actually heard of third hand horror stories... I decided not to pursue a possibility there for that reason...
But enough of my memoirs... :p
I´ve been reading the clues that the next b5 production is a film, and it's got me a little excited.
But if JMS is there right now, filming, that means the so is everyone else.
and that would mean a name and title of project and (in production) in most people diaries. So surely some word would have drifted........or do you think everyone in the production is keeping their cards close to their chests?
Stages there seem to be pretty much booked
Lets say for example that they would use the same studio-space that is now used by 365 days a year, so for them to start production, something else needs to finish.
Let's for example assume they will use the same Stages the Hitchiker's guide is using. THhgttG is scheduled to end filming in August, so Sets for a B5 movie could only start beeing built starting September. let's give them a month or so for building the first few sets so that shooting can start in October.
As for anyone talking: Remember that SiL was filmed at the end of Season 4, and until it aired virtually no word had gotten out what happened in that episode, though all actors, production crew, the WB liason etc. knew about it, and there was a kind of a fallout with Claudia Christian.
The B5 folks know how to keep their mouths shut.
