His 2nd period of office would have ended this week, on July 8th

He was a competent President and a great man I admired most.
He was invaluable to Austria especially on the sector of foreign affairs, where he worked hard to restore Austria’s reputation that had been damaged by various events in the recent years.
Honest politicians are very rare but President Dr. Klestil was one of them.
He never broke his promise and always stood to his principles and the people of Austria.

You will be sorely missed.

That must be a horrible shock. It's a great loss to lose an honest and competent leader, because they're so rare.

Thats true enough. I must confess I did not know much about him, but my sympathies go out to the austrian people nonetheless.

    that sucks.

As has already been stated (sort of), a truky idealistic leader rarely survives the compromise and often downright ugly corruption of ideals that the current sorts of polotical systems require for anyone to get into the upper echelons. For Dr. Klestil to get so far means he was a truly gifted man.

If you prescribe to MBTI psychological typing then I'm sure everyone will be unsurprised to know that there has never been an idealist in the ultimate seat of power in the USA. Mores the pity.

Atleast, thankfully this time, there were no asassins and beginnings of wars involved with the death of a prominent Austrian...
