Why abandon the stable engine? Don't get me wrong, I love the concept of FS2_Open, but I've yet to find a release that didn't crash at one time or another.
Because retail FS2 engine cannot offer features we need.
For example old Nial beam which was a pulse with long trail sucked, nobody wants to use it if you can use real beams instead. No different jump in and out anims, no 3D jump anims. And thats just a few.
(OK, FS2 did support a special warpout anim which was different than the standard, but it never worked as it should have. It was a hack to add different jump anim for Knossos.)
There are much more we can do with fs2_open than we ever could do with retail engine. It is the future of FS2, its as simple as that.
Crashes you had was because of memory leaks, in the future it will not be a big problem because there is a tool currently in development which will greatly help coders to deal with memory leaks.
In short, without fs2_open The Babylon Project could never be a true Babylon 5 total conversion.
Ok, to be fair, I did try out the latest incarnation of FS2_open (last version I used was the one bundled with R2) and I have noticed a LARGE improvement. I'm quite impressed....other than the fact that it broke the maxim gun. I would've posted about it on HLP, but there was already a thread on that subject....and it offered no solution whatsoever since karajorma did nothing but act like an elitist asshole the entire time.
Yeah, now you see what kind of improvements I was talking here. :)
There was no fs2_open bundled with R2? Where did you get it from? Or are you perhaps talking about "TBP Base"? It was unofficial and not supported.
Oh and by the way, this might interest you a bit.
Note: HLP might be acting up at times... a side effect on being on a free hosting by as big host as Gamespy...
They put one of the old into movies on the website here. With all the changes coming to FS2 through the SCP I think this vid isn't too far from reality.
We've got some new screenies in a case some haven't paid attention to our forums.

I had two Warlock screenies too but I accidentally deleted them.
The Drazi fleet is my personal favorite of the ones posted above. :)

We don't want screenshots, we want the game! :p
Screenshots make us drrol and the keyboard doesn't really like that. :)

But I agree... it's too flat.

Poor little Hyperion won't know what hit it.
The shots look great, I'm going to have to get around to loading the game someday...
