Probably because HDTV has an aspect of 16:9; I would guess the wide computer resolutions were decided later, and they wanted to associate the two in the minds of consumers.

I wonder how many people will bitch and moan about having 16:9 forced on them because they're too ass-backwards to watch movies as they were truely intended to be watched.

I know a couple of those people. My girlfried's mom, aho loves full screen becase "I Don't want to waste my screen"
And, My uncle, who is a really nice guy, but he actually believes that you lose picture with a widscreen movie (technically correct, but realistically way wrong.
My mother used to be that way. She would pitch such a fit if I picked out a WS movie because she hated the "big ass black bars". (Personally, I don't even notice the bars.) After explaining to her why they were there, and showed her what they look like on a WS TV, she lost her attitude over it. Of course now she'll ask me "is this widescreen?" when a new movie comes out on DVD.
Thats another thing that pisses me off. Why the fuck are there so many damn FS movies on the shelves, but so few WS? FS is an abomination to the film industry. They butcher a movie just to appease a few dumbasses that are to ignorant to know how a movie is supposed to be seen? Movies shouldn't even be released in FS at all. Movies should be shown as they were originally filmed. Period.
It's more a matter of ignorance than sheer stupidity (although the latter certainly does play a role); many people who rent/buy movies on tape/DVD have never seen a movie on the "big screen" at all.
Nonetheless, I agree with you on the format. If anything, there should be two versions; one in the original (widescreen) format and a FS one. Hopefully this will happen once HDTV sets become more common.

Thing is, thats what's going on now. Its just that WS isn't as common on the shelves. This is why I'm advocating WS only releases. They're going to have to get used to WS since its going to be forced on them eventually with the implimentation of HDTV.
How much you wanna bet that they'll complain that they'll have "those damned bars" when they get forced to use HDTV?

You mean on the sides of the TV instead of on the top because they wasted their money on full screen movies?;)

Actually, I was talking about on the top and bottom. They'll only get the bars on the sides if they own a WS TV.
Sorry, I thought that you were talking about the bars on the sides of widescreen tvs with a square picture. People probably will complain about that though.
