I assume this is the same newegg that hired the bluehornet spammers to spam ads for their service and so, violate US law in
some cases?

never knew that, and frankly...I don't really care.

It's the best online store for PC parts in the USA, and 99% of the net agrees with me. :D

hehehe

• I use my main address for everything, and I don't get any spam... heck, I wish I did, so I'd have a reason to check it every day. :(

That'd be great. :D

At one point in time I was a moderator/news poster for the Files Network (jk2files and hl2files, specifically), and I generally got about (literally) 600 messages per hour. One person, annoyed that I had edited his flame post, signed me up for every newsletter available on About.com, signed me up for various websites just to get my name added to spam lists, and was even thoughtful enough to send a few personal flames, and kindly link to an ebay auction for female condoms and "toys".

Its called a dictionary attack. Spambots stick dictionary terms together and start sending e-mail to it. If it doesn't bounce back, it gets added to the list.

Just a little! Maybe... 5 messages a day? ;)

Hmmm...latest annoying spam...

Some idiot spammer has decided to use my e-mail address (one that I use as a "public" one on a website, so isn't a main one) as the "reply-to" in some of their spam to MSN network...

I might point out that it seems that they send out 40 e-mail batches. All 40 always bounce back TO ME!

Just once...just once...I would like to find out WHO is sending this so I could contact someone and give them the hint to investigate this idiot using MY ADDRESS to spam people!

I often get bounces on my firstones.com address.

the joys of never having a 'home address'. I have 3 yahoo accts. Zero spam in one, about 100 a day get sent to my 'bulk folder' in the 'main' one and my last acct... is my spam box.... billyuns of spams a second... and I dont much care, thats what its for..:)

As much as I hate to admit it... I think there should be a nominal fee on sending email, 2c or something and watch the spam all but dissapear overnight... spammers rely on volume.. a 2c per email charge woud KILL them and barely bother most consumers and also pay for the internet at large, giving a revenue stream to legit companies.
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
hm... or something like " X free mails per day " and above that, every mail costs a few cent
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The fundamental problem with that sort of system is that it doesn't fit with the basic decentralised nature of the internet. In other words, who do you pay?
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
well that's easy.
Me ;)
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
I would have said that you pay whoever's running the outgoing mail server, who in turn pays maybe the guvment. The problem with this is that open-source mail servers wouldn't be too hard to come up with, and then wouldn't be too hard to modify such that they don't automatically charge people, so spammers could run their own servers in that fashion. I really don't see how any method would actually work, unless maybe the receiving server gets to charge people rather than the sending server.

Charging people 2 cents per email sent harms the innocent, too. Plus, it ignores the real issue with spam - it's unsolicited. The bulk issue can take down mail servers, but IMO the more important issue is _unsolicited_. I value my privacy. Very much. If I wanted to buy Widget X, I'd go out and look for it.
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Wasn't there a load of Hyperbole about the US Postal Service trying to charge for emails at some point a few years ago?

:p

No thanks. I'd rather advocate the introduction of spammer bounty hunts. If you catch a spammer, you get X ammount of money (depending on how much spam the offender has sent out per day). Just to make things even worse for the spammers, whatever money they made would be siezed, and what's left from the prize given to the bounty hunter(s) would be donated to a charity of the bounty hunter's choice (would have to be a legitmate one of course).
