I get into arguments about this all the time, but it's usually with people who don't believe that the Half-Life engine can't render more than 100 fps...
100 fps will look subtlely better than 80 or 90 fps... It's not something you can really comprehend, but it does look just a bit smoother.
Of course, the refresh rate on my crappy monitor maxes out at 85. :p
He means with your eyes A2597. The computer will see a difference, but your eyes won't because the card may RENDER that fast, but your eyes can't see more than 60fps.

Load that program up, set your refresh rate to 120, then set one side to render at 60FPS, and the other at 120.
Now tell me you can't see a difference, because I can see the difference between 100 and 120 using that program.
I think the other side's argument, however, is that while there is a difference, it's negligible in-game. 50 fps highest detail looks better than 250 fps Counter-Strike, after all. :p

The other side's argument is that it really doesn't matter above a certain point. :)
the only time it really maters is when you have to turn really fast...thats the only time that having 120FPS really helps you over having 60....AFAICT anyway

Only if the game is FPS based. (ie: polls your controller once per second) If its not, then it wouldn't matter if its 60 or 100,000.
the point i was making was that your eyes arent going to notice those subtle differences between 90 and 102fps. Its just not possible, your eyes arent that fast.
The other thing I was doing was taking a crack at ATI, in the last month Ive replaced 3 ATI cards on computers of friends. They just got tired of rolling back drivers to play one game (bf vietnam) and having to install the new drivers to play another game (hitman contracts). So I recomended they go with nvidia cards, now no more driver problems.
And you know to be honest, thats my only problem with ATI. I would buy and endorse their products if only they had solid driver support. But they dont. Yeah, Im sure some of you fanboys will yell at me and say thats crap you dont have driver problems. But I know too many people that do now, or have in the past. Myself included. Nvidia spent too much time working with Microsoft on the xbox chip, it put them behind ATI in the tech curve, they are catching up with the 6800, the reviews I just read puts both the GeForce 6800 and the ATI X800 very evenly matched at performance. The big difference is the nVidia card is a power hungry card and demands two external power supply connectors as opposed to the ATI needing just one. So once again, that puts ATI just a little ahead of nVidia, but so what. write a driver that works with everything, hands down the first time and Ill buy it. Otherwise, nVidia, the way its meant to be played!!
And if you check out some of the stuff at Anandtech.com, Nvidia's $400 6800GT keeps up pretty well with the $500 x800xt platinum, and in some cases (OpenGL based games) surpasses it. That combined with the fact that they fixed the D3D support and even have support for directx 9.0c, means I know where my new card is coming from.
Nvidia fell on their face yes, and they still havn't quite caught up to ATI in the D3D field, but they are coming back and doing a hell of alot better than they were with the crap FX.

yes...yes you can.
and to proove it, set your refresh rate to 120, and use this program.

Well, that too. :p
Especially if your FPS tops your refresh rate.
