So close! Had I heard about it two weeks ago, I'd be in californina right now.

11:02 a.m. ET: Mike Melvill and his SpaceShipOne have made it into space. Everything looks good, mission official said, and the craft is now gliding back toward a landing at the Mojave Airport, where it took off earlier this morning.

Looks like there's a new astronaut in town!
[edit]Well, bobo just answered my question. And the video stream suddenly got good. :) Seeing SS1 gliding along with its chase plane... it's an amazing site.
Today, the world changed. I'm going to chuck some lyrics in here just for the hell of it. :)
I see a light in the sky
The dark days end
We lift our wings to fly
I hear a voice in the wind
The tide has turned
We are now alive
Look, a new world has come

I should probably go to bed now. Many dreams to be had. :)

As far as I can tell, it made it, but I think I heard mention of some problems at one point.

Melvill reported hearing a bang during the high-altitude portion of the flight. Something was seen hanging from the bottom of the craft at the landing site. There appeared to be damage at or near the left rear landing gear, but it was not clear if it had anything to do with the bang.
Now if NASA would just get shuttles to the air, couple more years with them on the ground and someone might start thinking that it would work more efficiently if they start buying "shuttle services" from private companies.:D
Sadly, I was not in attendance; I couldn't find anyone else around who could go with me....

Too much "Last Exile" for you. :p
But this is great news, the future looks a bit brighter for me to get to space. :)

A bunch of rather important people seem to think it would be. I'm inclined to agree.
From http://space.com/missionlaunches/SS1_press_040621.html:
At a post-landing press briefing, the 63-year old Melvill described a series of technical snags that haunted his record-setting flight. Right after motor ignition, the pilot said the craft rolled 90 degrees to the left, then 90 degrees to the right. "It has never ever done that before," he explained.

Melvill said he leveled out the rocketship, but then experienced trim problems during his climb outside the Earth’s atmosphere -- an issue that he dealt with as he made his way to a desert runway landing.
That would explain the "getting a lot of pitching" I picked up at one point through the horrible static on the MSNBC stream.
I was there.
It was awesome, but there were too many people for me to see the whole takeoff. My father and I were lucky to get a very good view of the awesome landing of SS1 and the simultaneous flyby of the chase planes, but unfortunately my camera crapped out on me right before I could take a shot of it. Still, it was worth leaving at 3 a.m. and being tired as hell for over a day afterwards.

Well, hey, let's make it a FirstOnes get-together.
Yeah! You can pay for my trip over there. :)
