Hey, is it time for a Firstones Road trip? Maybe an annual "walkabout"?
Personnally, I would love to see NZ and see some of the LOTR (not LOTR ) film sites. If I could meet Mr. Biggles and some others, too, that would make it even better!
Who wants to go get some fresh kiwis (as if there aren't enough fresh Kiwis on this board )?
Most of my life I’ve wanted to visit New Zealand. I even looked into immigration. From what I've seen I think that I'd want to stay. But it appears that the government only wants young people with a load of money, or people that have specific job qualifications – and it doesn’t look like writer/ designer/ video-producer falls into any of the job categories they’re looking for. Still – may hop a freighter one day and disappear into the forests.
Randy, isn't that a nice change to the weather of the always sunny California to have a little rain and snow sometimes?

New Zealand? Well, that's a big surprise to me. You don't even have these long, dark and cold winters there like we have. That's been said to be a big factor affecting in people to commit suicides here.

Not that anyone wants to compete for places in this kind of competition, but have a read of this report: http://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/IASR/suicide-rates.htm

Differences in reporting and coronial proceedures will affect the statistics, but worryingly, 9 of the top 11 highest suicide rates are from former Soviet or Eastern Bloc countries.
Lithuania has the highest suicide rate on Earth. Finland ranks 9th worst, Australia 27th and New Zealand 28th of the countries surveyed.
Of course, all of these rates are far too high for comfort. It's a little like ranking snake venom - one will kill you in 5 minutes rather than 4, but the outcome is the same.

I think we all need some light therapy. If we can convince our bodies that the days are longer, I'll bet we'll cheer up. I prescribe Ginkgo extract, Kava extract, 20 minutes in a sun tan booth, 20 minutes in a hot tub, and an hour with a geisha walking on our backs.
Jack prefers Sumo Wrestlers to Geishas – oooo-kay.

spent about 20 hours in bus terminals...oversold crowded cattle cars... yick.
but.. I'm finally at my womans home town in New Mexico... it nice and cold too... but.. I prefer too cold to too hot, so I'm not bitching too much.
As far as NZ goes... yeah it would suit you Randy from the little potted history/profile you gave me about what you find geographically erotic... all those big verdant peaks thrust up into the damp sky..
if you do go over there sometime, go see the glacial fiords and the resultant vertical forrests.. they blew my mind...
the form like this... sheer vertical rockface=lichen/mosses=cracks=soil collects=bigger clinging plants like figs and vines=bigger plants and trees=forrest growing out vertically from a sheer rockface... and when a storm comes it shears off like a carpet off a wall...
anyways..
we head for Baha on Saturday in a Claytons RV... will keep you posted...
I guess the buses are quite crowded in the US after the 9.11. events. People rather use buses than planes for security reasons, which is quite understandable.

Buses have been this way for years. Especially for interstate routes...
When I was younger I took a Greyhound bus from California to Kansas. Took forever, and was cramped, uncomfortable, and spooky at times with some of the characters that boarded.
It certainly was the Cheapest way to make the trip though!!!
Good lord I would take a train over a bus any day. Sure takes a little longer but a lot more comfortable.

Buses in New Zealand (the intercity ones) tend to be very comfortable. Nice coaches with nice seats, not crowded.

It's been pretty uneventful.. but then again its just like Vincent says...
travelling is all about the little differences...
Like buying booze at a Supermarket/grocery store, buying a pump action shotgun at Walmart, paying for gas/petrol before you fill up. etc etc etc etc

booze comes from a prescribed liquor store/bottle shop or over the counter at a licenced pub. Thats it.
Just the way it is. I guess its good in one way in that having it a little more restricted means there are less kiddies out there getting alchohol poisoning...
That was only an example Jack... I have a licence for a C class firearm like a pump action but I'd bet the import duties and fifty seven page forms would make it unworthwhile.
I'm really tempted to buy a paintball marker though, we just dont have the market access you guys do for them. You can buy one for about a third of what we pay at home.

You can get beer in supermarkets here since a law change 2 years ago. Personally, I think it's a stupid idea, and a survey recently has found that the law change (which also lowered the drinking age from 20 to 18) has resulted in young people, especially those below the drinking age, having more to drink at a time and an increase in cases of alcohol poisoning.
