The new Nintendo dual screen handheld doesn't look nearly as stupid as I thought it would. It actually looks kinda nifty.

Meanwhile, the new Zelda looks amazing.

It's quite a nice idea, though I really do love what I'm seeing from Sony. the PSP looks to have a remotely decent interface, probably will share the XBrite screens their laptops use (low power + high brightness and contrast + resolution = WIN!). But, how's that nice screen going to stay nice without an easy way to cover it? Nintendo wins with the SP and DS due to the nature of a clamshell design.

From having spent a good deal of time playing silly games on my PDA, I can certainly say that using a stylus to draw on the screen ala the sonic game I heard about can really be an annoying experience. Though, will reserve final judgement until I actually see it.

Something that does bug me about both of these is still the size. I've always liked the traditional narrow layout. Stretched devices always seemed uncomfortable in my hands.

It's definitely going to be hard to chose between the nintendo and sony offerings. They both have their good points, but they also both have their drawbacks. the Nintendo DS is backwards compatible with my GBASP games, so I could trade that in, plus it has the dual screen thing which might see some interesting games. It also has the clamshell design, which I really like.
The PSP, on the other hand, is uber-powerful and has a screen that will probably be great looking. It uses a larger capacity media format, so probably better looking games in general (although I find that on a portable device, you don't really need hires textures or prerendered movies). However, it lacks a way to protect the screen (likely it'd need a separate carry case, although this isn't really a problem) and it looks a bit wide for holding.

  • Wow, that does look pretty cool. I'm sold, provided they plan to sell the design to Sony or ANYONE.

Nintendo already has 100 developers behind the DS and has dominated the handheld market for 15 years.

Sony has a uber powerful system coming out with fancy 3D graphics and probably a good amount of support for it.

However both will still have pricey games, due to both having propietory (?) designs for how their games are stored. sony's mini dvd and nintendo's cartridge's.

I believe price will be a factor once again.

the PSP will cost around 250 bucks with NO GAMES

the DS will be around 150 (though i suspect itll be a little lower, not much be a little) and will play all of your previous GBA games. I'm also curious to see if itll play ole game boy games too to be truly backwards compatable.

Plus nintendo has the greatest games. So i suspect Nintendo to win this one, though it'll be a battle.

I kinda hope Nintendo wins this one, since their portable division seems to be what keeps them alive. I think they face very serious competition from Sony, though. The PSP has the instantly recognisable to anyone Playstation name behind it, and is likely to be a bit more versatile than the DS.
  • PSP is going to be a lot more versatile, but I doubt it'll convert many all that quickly... Nintendo's a lot more recognizable. Playstation fans will buy it, but your generic techno-illiterate would probably rather play Pokemon. :)
