They also should have addded a "to be continued" or something to the end, before the P.J. credit comes up.... several people I talked to had no idea it was a trilogy.

THe "To be continued..." thing is something I've heard of a bit. Some people I know were wondering what would happen, and why the ending was "so damn open"
The length is fine. I really liked it, as I was able to get very involved with the story. The longer the time between the opening and closing credits, the more time for the story to sink in.
Also, having two hour movies might have made ending each film a bit too complicated for the casual viewer.
I also get the feeling the studio wouldn't want to sign on for six movies... I know the cost wouldn't be much different in the end, but in the mind of the execs that would seem like a huge risk. Doing all three at the same time was big enough of a leap of faith for them no doubt.

They did skip parts of the story, but the way that Tolkein wrote, to put that in the movie directly would put the audience to sleep.

I read from a Salon.com article that Jackson originally planned two movies and had a deal with Miramax who wanted only one movie. Therefore Jackson moved to New Line Cinema, whose boss suggested that Jackson makes three movies since that's the number of the volumes. So, FYI, don't go blaming New Line.
The movie was the best adventure film I remember ever seeing. There were few trivial things I think were a bit unstylish etc. (like the battle between Gandalf and Saruman, and I was actually a tiny pit disappointed of the Balrog), but none of them harmed to whole.

I'm well aware of that information, and I'm not blaming New Line for anything. It is very likely that they did place a limit of 3 hours on each movie, as after that it's starting to get far too long for most people. I see nothing wrong with that.

Considering I was beginning to get just a bit uncomfortable in my seat just a bit before the credits, I see there to be good reason to go no longer.

I was fortunate enough to be seeing it in the nice flash cinema, which means really comfortable seats with head rests and lots of leg room.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous to expect the movie to completely follow the novels. That rarely happens in Hollywood. Very rare. Despite any changes that were made from the novels, I thought that "Lords of the Rings" was a superb movie. Period. It should easily win Best Picture of 2001.

It's ridiculous to expect a movie to follow the novel perfectly, but it isn't ridiculous to expect it to stick to the novel and not introduce new material or change the story or ideas presented in the novel. Few movies manage this. LotR is the best example of how to do it yet.

Listen, if changing the story a bit or introducing new material will help the movie, I say do it.
I am *very* much looking forward to the director's cut of the movies on DVD!
The word is that Jackson will present them in their full uncut versions
(the way he would have shown them at the theater in the first place
if the studio would have let him have that much time) when they are
released on home video. This may well put the movies at well over 4 hours each.
IIRC, Jackson wanted 4 1/2 hours per movie, and shot them that way,
but the studio made him keep the theatrical release to 3 hours. So we
could be seeing three 4 1/2 hour movies on DVD.
Woohoo! I love it! There is no such thing as too long a Tolkien
movie when it's done as well as jackson has done it. The more the merrier.

We all know that it's three volumes, six books, all about PK etc., but we are not average people (for the most part, no names ). We are the ones who have fun looking into and reading all this stuff on the net, and we are the exception, not the rule.
And besides, how could it have hurt to add the 5 seconds (what, 150 frames??) of "Next Christmas: The Two Towers" ?

Just saw the film last night, for the second time! Boy does it rock! I watched it back home in my local cinema, and we had an intermission, which was a bit annoying, I think they had to change the film reels over, something to do with not having gun reel projectors or something (not sure really, its a small cinema). Last nights show had no intermission, which was good. There were 4 showing last night, and 3 were booked solid. The one I went to was pretty full though. In my home cinema they had the 3 screens showing it and both sold out, and its been on for 2 weeks.
