Heh. Protected from that little hellspawn here.

Even at work, we keep the anti-virus up to date always.

Had my laptop turned off the entire past weekend. Then I came back to school sunday night, turned it on, and plugged into the network. Right off the bat I get a message from my virus scan saying it was unable to update for the past 3 days (oweing to the comp being off). Ok, no biggie I think, It'll update now. No sooner was it updated then it started catching the virus and deleting it. Fortunatly I only had it shut me down once before I updated XP. Problem solved. Was I lucky, or is it just that easy to fix for anyone who has half a clue.

Macs aren't to immune worms either. ;) Matter of fact someone cared enough to write a worm for OSX a few weeks ago. :D Then there are the however many thousands of bugs for Unix that have been out for years. :p

Microsoft's OSs can't be let to internet without firewall between them. (and if there's two of them, hardware and software firewalls, it's just better)

But unfortunately mankind is dumb as boot. Only part of it is capable to think enough to realise that.

well gee.... lets compare lists of known worms, viruses and other nefarious software to hit the Windows platform in comparison to the Mac...

*unrolls list for Mac, finding it to be about 2 foot long*

*unrolls list for windows... from a massive 3 phase electric motor driven drum, the ammount of pulp used to make the list being from 1000 acres of timber...*

this will take a while guys... I'll be back when I get to the end...

The reason why there are more worms and viruses for MS Operating Systems than for any other is not that they have more holes and exploits, but because to all the scriptkiddies and psychopathic idiots who don't know how to focus their energies onto something positive, Microsoft is the devil, thus everyone who uses MS OS is stupid, and what better to get a mental orgasm than to show them how stupid they are, by raping their systems.
That they actually inflict physical damage with those things (due to the Sasser worm, banks, post offices, etc. had to close for a day because their Computers were down).

It has not that much to do with bad programming, but with higher visibility.

correction, it was neither a worm, trojan nor a virus. read:
Mac OS X virus alert is a scam

Intego pretty much made this one up.

What was released is a proof of concept of a Finder bug, not a working trojan that can delete all your files and email itself. No such thing exists yet, and no source code is publically available. And even if someone were to use the technique, distribution would be very constrained for reasons explained below.

As it turns out, the bug is solely an _icon_ bug. Indeed, as shown in the screenshot available in the comments, even though the file indeed has the mp3 icon (because of its extension), notice that the file type is in fact "Application".

The bug only affects CFM applications. Indeed, Mac OS X still honors Classic file type and creator codes, and also those take higher priority over file extensions. Therefore, setting the file type to AAPL makes that file an application and the Finder will try to execute it when it is double-clicked.

It is not a buffer overflow exploit in iTunes as some have claimed. The CFM code is indeed in an ID3 tag, but that's only a conveniant way of making the file a valid MP3. This can be done because CFM applications have a resource which tells the system where in the file the executable code is.

Which leads to the major distribution problem of this technique: only CFM apps can be bundled in such a way. Therefore, they need to be packaged in .sit or .sitx files, and if sitx is used, the sender will need to manually set the execute bit on the file (at least on Panther, Jaguar ignores the execute bit). If such an mp3 file is sent over the internet, the resource fork will be stripped and it will essentially break it.
Yeah... not shit sherl ? your point is ? If you dont want to deal with viruses and firewalls and crap... MAC or Linux fixes that, regardless of the motorvation/accessibilty/'market' for virii

It also fixes the "Problem" that i actually can do something with my pc...

Also, you might want to sometimes consider how the other human beeings on the other end might receive what you are writing. I read that as a personal attack that quite upset me.

Even if Microsoft did close all of the big-enough-to-fly-a-Vorlon-Planet-Killer(tm)-through holes in their apps/OSes right away (or never allow such things to exist in the first place), you can bet that some miscreant will still find a weakness to exploit. The same holds true for OSes and apps written for Macs; if Macs dominated the computer market as Wintel PCs do today, they would be prime targets for every virus, worm, and trojan horse imaginable.

Say what you will, but there will never be a bug-free, virus or worm-proof application or OS as long as human beings are involved in its development and other human beings are seeking ways to FUBAR it.

Umm...are you blind or something? His point is that the more exposure something gets, the more it gets poked and prodded so as to cause the most wide-spread damage. When you take into account how incredibly complex an OS Windows is (from the coding side), its completely understandable that there are going to be alot of bugs to be worked out. Any programmer worth their salt will tell you the same thing. However, I seriously doubt you'll comprehend anything through that thick skull of yours.

You do realize that Mac OSX and Linux are unix based...right? (thus inheriting Unix's long list of exploits, some of which probalby got re-opened without being noticed on the Mac end) Just saying "buy a mac" is about the most ignorant thing you can say to "solve" the problems with exploits in Windows.

I hearby challenge you to prove that Linux and Mac OSX are bulletproof to any attacks whatsoever on the OS. Otherwise, give your stupid trolling a rest.
