How many of you LARP?
I do, been doing it on and off (mostly off) since 1993. Currently involved in a Dark elf group with no less than 5 people armoursmithing (including me, and Elaka Kakan), a couple who do leatherworks, and sewing. (Yes, its a serious project)
Pictures to come this summer :)

Would like to, but no groups around here.
Start one then. :)
I saw a website for a group in NZ (actually these days NZ is probably a bit of a Mecca for Larpers.)
There are a multitude of rulesystems out there, here's ours:

Weapons construction is pretty straightforward or you can buy them for around £30 - £50 each (NZ$90 - NZ$150 wow sounds a lot put like that!)

Where's the pictures then?
Do you ever get over to the UK? There are several events during the last weekend in August , the biggest is called The Gathering(http://www.lorientrust.com/) where around 5000 larpers get together for politics, drinking, shopping, role-play, drinking, catch up with friends, big battles and occasionally drinking.
You have to be pretty robust to be a ref too: http://www.merlinroute.co.uk/galleryfiles/2002photos/gathering%20security.jpg
in fact.. if you really think about it... LARPing LIMITS your ability to generate the world you are creating arounf yourself.
When everything save some dialogue and a couple floorplans is in your head... you gain a tremendous freedom you simply cannot get with Larping.
eh.. sorry... hardcore paper and dice fan here... Larpers blur the lines between reality and thier larp world too much... it gets rather ludicrous at times...

:-)
I'm a tabletop player too (for more years than I care to think about! )and if I had to choose between the two I'd drop LRP.
Fortunately I don't have to make that choice, yet.
It is true that the worlds that you build in your imagination can far outstrip anything that can be done in LRP but that's not to say your imagination isn't used in LRP. It isn't possible to duplicate the attack of a huge red dragon but it is possible to scare the adventurers silly by playing with their minds.
Some years ago we used this WW2 gun emplacement: http://www.airsoft.org.gg/Sites.html (now used by the local airsoft company) (some history:(http://www.guernsey.net/~cedavey/occupationzone/fortess%20a4.pdf)
filled it with mist from a smoke machine, played some sound effects and pitted the players against the Aliens. :D
In all there were between 30 and 40 people involved in the project and the players still reminisce about the event, even the ones that didn't make it out.
As for blurring the lines. there might be some merit in that, I'm really not sure, but consider this:
The last time you described a tabletop scenario you played through to anyone how many times did you use a phrase like "..and then I..."?
I know I do it. "I hit the ogre, pulled up the trap door and jumped in and then the mage hit me with a fireball" etc.
My gut reaction is that the real difference between tabletop gaming and lrp gaming is the amount of exercise you get. :D
Lately it's just been some short-lived openRPG games, and a few 3E D&D sessions I DM for my brother and cousins when they come to visit.
Nowadays, I'm getting into Warhammer 40k, already got me a decent-sized Blood-Angels Army and starting off on some Ulthwe craftworld Eldar...
And I just started buying A Game of Thrones CCG. Theres a huge community of gamers here in Gothenburg (and of course, Im moving)
As with most things it depends on a lot of factors. If you do give it a go try to get a bunch of friends together to go the 1st time. I don't know much about the US groups other than the weapons tend to be a lot more padded and less realistic looking than the ones used in europe although I read recently that the Nero system has started to introduce them from approved sources.

Only tried Lord of the Rings battle games but it didn't grab me the way an rpg does. My nephew benefitted though, he ended up with a box load of stuff.:D
