Look at the lid, and the rim that if fits into at the top. Now, if I'm the only one who is reminded of a toilet seat....

It's a thaumeter! Not seen one of those in this universe before! I wonder how it got here. Watch out for "Plib" noises.

It has got to be Louis XIV's (the Sun King) waffle iron with some wooden parts. :)

Well. I'm guessing something related to either a punch card mechanism, or possibly musical instrument driven by a punch card, such as a music box. It looks like the arms can be moved in and out. THen a wax pad or piece of paper is put in the oval, the lid closed, and the perfeations are made.

I wish there were more pictures of the bottom and lower edges.

That actually sounds quite feasible.

Besides looking like the instument Max Reebo played in Star Wars: ROTJ, I would also say that it looks like it could possibly be some form of a musical instrument.

Nope....

I think you'll find its a stretching and/of framing device for pictures. Oval framed portraits and pictures are consistent with the period when the device was made, given its made from brass and wood to a very fine degree.

Whatever material is put into it has to be a fabric of some kind, maybe canvas for art stretching, perhaps doilies or lace, or even needlework. It's very hard to keep the tension consistent around the edges of a circular piece of needlework and... I think it's next to impossible to keep the tension consistent without a distinctly variable device like this one.

I'd say this is an 'Oval needlework stretcher'.

and dont bother trying to gazump me I've just submitted my email entry. :)

What country is it from originally?!
Looks like an instrument but it has nails in 2nd pic, so I got no idea!
It also reminds me of Roulette, but that it can't be. :)

ahhh.. Messiah may be onto something there... its a De-sade anus stretching machine... so you can get much larger fuzzy animals up your butt...:D

Im going to have to agree with Shadow Boxers FIRST response. I thought it had something to do with needlework or a loom of some kind.

That must have just been a cover.

I'm thinking it's a device to stretch a skin or some other kind of material into a shape that is taught enough for a percussion drum, and then snaps it tight against the target ...

Maybe...

I can't believe that SB, of all people, didn't know what that is. Its used for showing animations! You put the stills in the holes on the outside track, and place a light source on the inside. The whole thing spins around and the stills rotate past the only open viewport. When spun fast enough, it creates the illusion that something is moving on the screen.

Vert you wally... its not a rotoscope, even casual observation confirms this...

You dont think its an anal probe left by the grey in the 1800s?
• MartianDustMartianDust Elite Ranger
hehehee Messiah thats a more convincing theory. ;)
• Perhaps I'm not fully understanding the concept, but if you mean that an oval picture is hooked onto the spikes, and they are pulled out... then what do the three middle spikes do? They seem to be in the way, to me...

heheh, I was teasing SB, but if that actually was what I mentioned, the frames would be mounted vertically.
