which would you choose?

You have the option to buy a pure bred dog, or a mutt.
(OK, same for cats...pure breed, or what do you call a feline variety of a mutt?)

which would you choose, and why?

Myself, I'd choose the mutt. Pure breed = so inbred that everything that can go wrong will go wrong, and it has an IQ of 2.

First I don't think I'd buy, there are plenty of free dogs and cats out there that need good homes. I guess that would put me in the mutt category, as pure breeds are usually expensive and don't come free. The fact that most pure breeds have medical, behavioural, and intelligence problems, as A# said, is also a good point.

Howerver, as it happens I own a pure breed Belgian Sheep dog. We got her free from my aunt when Pickle was too old to have puppies. Retirement I guess :) Most of my aunt's dogs are highstrung, anemic, and barky. But Pickle's an exception from most pure breeds, in that she's the most intelligent and friendly dog I've ever met. I'm not just saying this because I own her, ask Worf.

So I guess I'm in the "I don't care what breed it is as long as it's intelligent and friendly" category.

    I can confirm that :D

I'm with Phi, I wouldn't buy one. I'd take one that needed a home.

But if it came to choosing between a purebreed and a mutt, I wouldn't care. It would depend entirely on the animal's personality.

I agree with Phi, except it would have to be a cat :)

I'd take in a free dog, mutt or pure...

I've never bought a dog, but if I had to spend money to rescue an animal I'd do it, and have rescued many from bad situations...

Some pets have picked me, and I respect animals more than most humans...

Not a hard decision for me, just not one that fits into your categories A2597...

    ;)

Are you in some society or volunteers group? :)

I am in agreement with Phi and Biggles.
I'd also rather have a cat and probably get one that needed a home. With pure breeds with cats don't some have to stay indoors? My m8s does! And I couldn't do that. I believe cats should be out in the wild as well as being at home. Obviously you're not going to get that prob with a pure breed dog. But I personally think it pays off more when you get an animal that needs a home, they seem more loving. I had a cat that would've died if I or no-one else had picked it up. It was bascially not eating after having been abandoned, taken to RSPCA and being alone in a cage all day, every day.
Then again there are some out there that after abandonment that can turn rather nasty and not very tameable!
Also I wouldn't care for intelligence long as its friendly.
    :)

Don't like that they can find a way to get almost every place?;)
  • Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
My labrador was a pure breed I reckon.. and still I've not met any other dog with the same kind of intelligence and just and loyalty. He truly was my best friend ever. :)

If I was to take an animal right now, I'd probably go out to the nearest animal shelter and find a cat that I'd think has seen too much crap in his/her days and give the lil' critter a good, loving home for the rest of the time 'is got left.

The problem is... I'm stark raving mad in love right now. And if anything comes out of this, I'm pretty sure it's for life, one way or the other. Too many things just click. And if this will be the case at some point (can't really dare dream yet)... we'll be the only couple on the block whose possible future kid will be the cool bugger with... the IGUANA!. :D

Yup, fur allergy, you guessed it. ;)
  • BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
You don't want an iguana. Get yourself a Hypergecko.
  • PhiPhi <font color=#FF0000>C</font><font color=#FF9900>o</font><font color=#FFFF00>l</font><font color=#00F
A Mozilla Hypergecko? I had one of those the other day...it's turned into a Mozilla Firesquid now.

  • BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Mine turned into a Hyperwhale, followed soon after by a Nanokoala.

I'd go for the mutt. In particular the runt of the litter. They always make for the best mannered dogs.
  • BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
One of our cats was the runt. She's a psycho little thing. :D

The other one is a lazy sod who is either sleeping stretched out somewhere or begging for food.

My Gfs two cats are the same...
  • Stupid cats are definetely more fun... our deck is about twenty feet off the ground in the backyard, and my cat has ended up falling more times than I can count. She tries to roll over when she sees us coming, and just picks the worst spots. :p
