Virus scanners really DO do something...
just in case anyone was wondering.

I thought they were for pretty graphics and fast number counting every week while they scan your system...

I woke up to a missing windows install...virus scan from NAV = negative on both drives...I'm hopeing it's gone, but...I dunno.
any other ideas folks?

What makes you think that a missing windows install is anything to do with a virus?
(I'm being serious by the way...)
;)
also, what models is your hard drive?
also also, check your IDE Cables for kinks, punctures, or other damage. I had a problem with a drive failure due to that once.

Well, I think it would corrupt whole content of HD if there would be some of those causing errors.
(my friend had a PC in which motherboard started to corrupt all data going through, corrupting all files on HD and causing extreme unstability)
third format seems like it is taking. :D
3 formats in 18 hours. has to be a record...

That actually happened to me on my last system. I went through two hard drives before I finally started replacing the mainboard. Though, that system is back in use now thanks to a PCI ATA Controller. Since then, i've had not a single problem (outside of the usual "Crap, no space!" stuff)
now I can't even install windows...it just shuts the PC down entirely.
heres the problem, as it has been. install windows, runs fine. come back a few minutes later (Or hours) and programs that WERE running, have no problem running. (In ram I guess)
however I cannot start new programs AT ALL. CTRL+ALT+DEL does NOT bring up a menu / menu bar, etc. for all intents and purposes, windows is gone. so, restart (Manually, via reset button)
checks for boot info from floppy, CD, then moves to HDD, and I get a black screen.
ONCE out of like, 4 times I got the windows boot menu, tried safe mode and it froze on mup.sys. so, last time, I tried to install. got to the installation process, and the PC just shuts down. to get it back on, you have to flip the main power button on the back of the PC off and on.
then it goes back to the install, and tells you what went wrong. main data tables couldn't copy.
so, from this info...can we deduce whats wrong? HDD? Mobo? I checked the IDE cables, and while yes, there were a couple small kinks (Like folded almost in half...it IS cramped) there were no nicks, etc.
could be the controller chip on the mainboard...
I don't have spare ATA 133 cables, but I have a ton of ATA 100 and ATA 66.
I hope you didn't pay more from those "ATA 100 cables".
They're all same.

Sound like mobo. Or more exactly IDE controller. (well, that's integrated into south bridge nowadays)
If trying with other HD and cable doesn't help, it's mobo.

it's a HDD problem...looks like I get to mess with the Master Boot Record!

They're all the same 80 conductor cables. They aren't any different dude.
well.....according to this: (I can't mess with PC as I'm on campus)

If so, then its a simple matter of booting to a DOS floppy, running "fdisk /mbr", booting from your XP CD, going to your recovery console and running "fixmbr" and rebooting.
my PC restarted / shut down in the middle of a windows install...sooooo, do I fix the MBR then format?
Would a low level format mean I don't have to mess with the MBR?
So try fixing MBR.
I'm thinking that if it would be corrupted MBR or other error, BIOS should report it.
Have you tried booting with other HDs?
Even with those which don't have OS. (because BIOS should give error message if it can't find OS)
so no other HDD....
ok...but another question......

A low-level format restores the drive to factory condition as you've written zeros to every part of the physical platter...including the master boot record. I'd only do this as a last resort though as from what little information you've posted, it looks like its a hardware issue.
Just do this:
Boot off of the XP CD and goto the recovery console. Run FIXMBR and exit the console. Then reboot and format the drive (do a FULL format, not a quick one). Then try installing XP.
If that doesn't work, download a copy of MEMTEST86, format a floppy with the /S command line option and drop the contents of the memtest86 zip file onto it and run EVERY test overnight. It will continue to run until you actually stop it manually. This will make sure your RAM isn't at fault.
Also, if your BIOS supports it (which it damn well better support it since its been available since '98) ENABLE S.M.A.R.T. for your drives. If it reboots and shuts down again, CHECK THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR PROCESSOR!
And I ALWAYS watch the temp of my procc...it's cool.

Temp isn't everything, especially when you're overclocking. :)
